Mac OS X Tiger vs. Windows XP

Oct 5, 2005 12:13AM PDT

I am a Windows XP user, and until recently I had always thought Windows was dominant for a reason: it was the best operating system. But lately I have been seeing more and more articles proving that Mac OS X is better. I know this is Mac forum so I am embracing much bias to Mac, but can anyone show me a non-biased comparison between the two operating systems. I mainly am looking for the speed, navigation, and cost efficiency.

Mac vs PC
Nov 6, 2005 2:47PM PST

My friend was a mac enthusiast. Owned what was a top of the line G5 based computer(i'm not sure about specs) thought it was god. I always argued that PC was better because of the hardware they always said that i was stupid. So one day i let them use my PC it was WinXP Pro on a custom built ASUS A8N deluxe with AMD 64x2 4200+, ATI Radion x800xt, 1Gb dual channel ddr400 sdram, 200GB SATA 3GB/s hard drive . Within a month my friend owned a similar PC.

I'm not going to say that Windows is a better OS. But until Apple makes a version of MAC OS that will run on a PC it will be all Windows/Linux for me.

For everyone that hates Windows because of the need for virus protection.
It is free and with dual-core processors they use very little system resources. Unless you open it and initiate it yourself you probably won't even notice it is running.

For the OS war thing that is going on unless if you include Games, 99% of all 3rd party games are built for Windows, Linux is by far the best OS.

Mac vs PC - it's not necessary to bicker here

choosing a mac or a pc is like choosing a favorite color. It's personal preference.

Keeping It Simple
Nov 7, 2005 9:49AM PST

I have been a licensed pharmacist for 35 years, and I have never found a mac based pharmacy software program running in a pharmacy where I have worked. Therefore, my home computers are PC's. Every time I use a PC I get a little bit better at all aspects of using the software and troubleshooting the machine. Every time I go to work I am in charge of a pharmacy which is dependent on a windows based machine, and pharmacies are totally dependent on PCs. If the PC malfunctions then we simply cannot fill prescriptions. Therefore, I prefer to practice the system I am so totally dependent on at work.

OS X Tiger vs. Windows XP
Nov 17, 2005 10:06PM PST

I am a former "Windoze" XP,98SE,98,ME and 95 user. Trust me on this. After using Windows pcs and OS' for 9 years, my friend (who has been a Mac user for as many years) talked me into buying a PowerMac G5 with dual 2.0 processers. I am currently using OS X Tiger vs.10.4.3. and it is the best OS that exists for the home or office user. After battling Windows pcs for years, I finally solved all my problems by getting a Mac. Mac OS's just WORK. They do exactly what you tell them to do and then some. So, if; you are considering switching to a Mac, then I promise you, you'll be pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't go back to Windows if Bill Gates would give me a new top of the line pc every six months. I cut my teeth on a Mac PowerBook G4 and it still works perfectly after 4 years. Also, I might add, I am the third party owner of that Powerbook. Two other people owned it before i did.

The Triangle of Expectation
Nov 27, 2005 12:49AM PST

I like both systems I just bought an Hp dv1310 with windows XP coming from an older Hp Ze4210 also running XP and I just bought my boyfriend an Apple Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger. It does seem to be the consensus that Apples crash less although when I have used the iMacs at the university computer labs they did seem to ?freeze-up? just as often as the PC?s (Gateways and Dells not that it matters). My Mac friends assure me this is due to improper maintenance on the part of the Lab administrators. I have been very happy with my PC?s although I must admit I come from a family of computer savvy people. Both of my parents are systems analysts, my brother works for IBM and my sister is also a programmer. I, on the other hand, am not in the computer field nor am I a gamer and so a light cost effective laptop fit my needs perfectly. I was very familiar with windows since that is what most of us grow up with and the basic interface is the same. Although using my roommates Apple OSX is very easy and I don?t really see a big difference between the two operating systems. They both have icons I click on and the programs start. That?s what an operating system should do. I can?t say that I was never frustrated with my old PC and I?m sure Windows was the culprit but I?ve come to expect that from computers and my answer to everything just like most people is to simply restart the computer and hope that it goes away LOL. Anyway I have had very few problems with both new computers and their operating systems. I do recommend procuring an anti spy-ware and anti-virus program if you use a windows based machine it has done wonders for controlling any crashes. I can?t even remember the last time I had a problem. I recommend PC doctor as an anti spy-ware program and of course there?s Nortons and Mcafee for anti virus. My boyfriend is a graphics designer and so he needed a higher end laptop and the Powerbook does it in style (I wanted him to look good at the coffee shop with his art school friends). I have to say since I bought both computers that Apples are very expensive, but you get what you pay for. It does however bother me that he seems to have joined some kind of Apple cult and insist that he is now somehow a superior human being for having a Mac even though I picked it out and bought it LoL. Anyway whatever you get remember the triangle of expectation between Good, Fast, and Cheap. You can only have two out of the three. Good luck !

Comparative review
May 24, 2006 7:37AM PDT

One of the most objective comparisions I've seen is to be found here:

http://www.xvsxp.com/

There is even a section on bias!

Very fair comments IMHO

Interesting Link !
May 25, 2006 9:23AM PDT

I haven't read any of it yet but one thing that struck me right away was the Mac X-OS logo beside the XP logo beside the XP Pro logo.

It strikes me as inherently unfair that MS is willing to sell their customers a watered down version of their operating system or a full strength "Pro" version at a higher price.

I think this says something about the business practices of MS more than the superiority of one system over another.

From my own experience - I use both XP and Panther on a daily basis - I like Mac better than XP but both get the job done.

Review

That is probably the best Mac/Windows review i've seen yet. At first it was kind of difficult to understand their points adding up, but afterwards it was more clear. Some of the things could have been given more or less points, but more so due to opinion. The final total score seemed to be reasonable. But like always, it all comes down to user preference.
