Question

Mac Networking Issue

Aug 20, 2012 9:02AM PDT

Folks,

I'm hoping someone can give me something here. Anything really. I've got a mac here at work, one of ten, and it is struggling with the network to our fileserver. Just to open a folder on the server to view files in Finder, takes about 2 minutes.

I have reformatted the drive and reinstalled from scratch. Everything works fine except for the networking to the fileserver. All of the other macs see the contents of folders on the server in seconds (or less). I have also run the machine through a different network connection to rule that out.

I've checked the network settings and the machine is connected at 1000mbps on "Automatic", the same as all the other macs.

The user is getting frustrated and I have run out of things to try. Any thoughts? Anyone...?

Thanks in advance
HP

Sorry. Too little detail.

With no information about the server, accounts, DOMAIN or peer based I can't guess why your new Apple is any different.

Clarification

Hi Bob,

Ok, here goes -

Server - Windows 2008 SP2. The thing here is that there are multiple shares on this fileserver. The other shares appear ok.
Accounts - the user account on the mac is part of a user group with R/W permissions on that share. I have also added explicit permissions for that account to troubleshoot. I have also tried connecting as a different user.
DOMAIN - domain is Active Directory and the machine is bound to the domain (as it was prior to rebuild).

Connection to the share is via SMB, as is the connection to other shares on that machine which appear to be working fine. The share in question is on a separate array RAID5 SATA on a P800. Not the best, I know, but every other machine works fine with it.

I have googled some suggestions of editing the smb.conf file, but that's a can of worms I'd really rather not open. Default setting are usually set for a reason.

Anyhow, I hope this information helps. Thanks for looking!

Just one idea.

Create a new account on the Apple machine and see if that account works. I've encountered this before and since the clients get charged by the hour so far not one has let me dig into this any deeper.

Hi R,

Yeah, I have tried this. No go. I've even gone so far as modifying the smb.conf and created an nsmb.conf file with additional settings. Still no go.

And now I have run out of options, so if you've got anything, I'd love to hear it!

The next call

Is to Apple and Microsoft to have them see if they can help. It runs about 150 a hour so I find many of the small businesses to balk at that. Again, I never had to tinker with said files. Something's off. Could be an odd limit in the number of shares or a firewall somewhere but I'm not there so I can't guess if there is some message that would give me a better clue. For example someone had non-alphanumerics in the name and password. "More security?" You bet.
