If it's under warranty

If it's under warranty still, sounds like a great time to exercise that. Odds are it's an issue with the logic board. Good news is that it isn't likely something that's the harbinger of something bigger. Bad news is that there's no way to fix this short of a logic board replacement. You could buy a USB sound card, but that would take up a valuable USB port on a Mini.

So, you can either decide to live with it, get a USB sound card, or replace the logic board.

Just a thought,

and for some reason it keeps ringing a bell with me.

Launch GarageBand and check the preferences, specifically Audio/Midi.

See what they are set to and, if they are not already there, set them to System Settings

Is that before or after

Is that before or after the monkey dance? Or maybe both?

Fixed IT!

I tried everything anyone suggested with no result. I gave up and being that the superdrive stopped working months ago I ordered a new one last night.
Then today I remembered I had put off an apple software"security update" just before losing my sound.
Installed the update and my sound came back!
Thanks ALL for trying to help.
