Mac mail cannot read email from outlook 2007

Apr 29, 2009 8:19PM PDT

Email recipients using Mac Mail have been reporting that when they get email from me (from Outlook2007 in the PC), it would include all the tags. Also happens when I send as RTF. Plain text is fine.

So I did an experiment and since I am a mac user too, I tested it myself on my mac mail. Test scenario is this:

1. I send email from Outlook2007 (PC) using HTML as default.
2. I open with Macmail, I get garbage. (see below.)
3. I open same email on Entourage, it's fine.
4. I open same email on webmail, it's fine.
everyone else receiving the email except for mac mail users are fine.

Why is this happening only in Macmail? What's the solution?

note: content of email as viewed form macmail (warning: it's long and full of tags):

Check you preferences in Outlook
Apr 29, 2009 10:05PM PDT

you are looking for something that is probably tagged as default for sending emails to other Outlook users and happens because MS uses a proprietary format for their mail transport and all of their email clients assume that everyone else is using MS products.

Used to be that Mac users, and others, would receive emails with win.dat attachments that were actually the email.

Check around, it's in there somewhere

thanks for the response.

outgoing email is set to html as default in my outlook2007. i also checked options before sending it out to make sure it is set to html.

but the question is why does it occur only in mac mail client? entourage may have been a bad example since it is an microsoft product, but our webmail, google and other 3rd party clients do not have this problem. So after having eliminated the possibilities, it seems that mac mail is the problem.

Take a look at,
Apr 29, 2009 11:46PM PDT

Tools/Options/Mail format and make sure that Internet Format is set with a check mark in HTML options and Outlook Rich Tex options is set to Convert to HTML format.
Those I the settings I use for Outlook2003 and I successfully send emails to Mac users, from work, using Outlook2003 without an Exchange Server and Outlook2003 with an Exchange Server.

Given that so many people, including yourself, have the same problem, it must be a setting in Outlook2007. Of course, you already know that.

I did check and it is set in html. also internet options is set to "Convert to HTML format." It's really bugging me because everything is set right but the tags look like RTF->HTML.

if i could send the screenshot in this forum i would.

Any solution? Have the same thing with my iPhone
Jul 6, 2009 11:25AM PDT

Were you able to find a solution to this? I'm having the same issue with my iPhone. If I send myself an email from outlook 2007 with just 1 space in the body in RTF or HTML format and then receive it on my iPhone, it comes in as:

{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\fromhtml1 \fbidis \deff0{\fonttbl {\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Arial;} {\f1\fmodern Courier New;} {\f2\fnil\fcharset2 Symbol;} {\f3\fmodern\fcharset0 Courier New;}} {\colortbl\red0\green0\blue0;\red0\green0\blue255;} \uc1\pard\plain\deftab360 \f0\fs24 {\*\htmltag19 } {\*\htmltag2 \par } {\*\htmltag2 \par } {\*\htmltag34 } {\*\htmltag1 \par } {\*\htmltag1 \par } {\*\htmltag161 } {\*\htmltag1 \par } {\*\htmltag241 } {\*\htmltag1 \par } {\*\htmltag241 } {\*\htmltag241 } {\*\htmltag1 \par } {\*\htmltag41 } {\*\htmltag2 \par } {\*\htmltag2 \par } {\*\htmltag50 }\htmlrtf \lang1033 \htmlrtf0 {\*\htmltag0 \par } {\*\htmltag0 \par } {\*\htmltag96
}\htmlrtf {\htmlrtf0 {\*\htmltag0 \par } {\*\htmltag0 \par } {\*\htmltag64

solution
Jul 6, 2009 11:45AM PDT

The solution I found was to save the contact in outlook as a vcard somewhere, delete the original contact, then copy the vcard back to outlook. I'm still not sure why it works but it does. There seems to be some configuration in the contact file itself that causes the formatting to be as such. Try it and let me know if it works with the iphone. Good luck

it works
Jul 6, 2009 11:58AM PDT

Wow, yep that was it. When you're writing an email in Outlook 2007 you can double click the recipients name and then a window pops up, the bottom selection is a drop down for internet format. The choices are Outlook RTF, plain text, or let outlook decide. When I checked my contact it was set for Outlook RTF, but when I deleted it and recreated it the default was let outlook decide. I then sent some test messages, if I choose let outlook decide it works fine, but if I choose Outlook RTF it comes through to my iPhone with all the code. I wonder how Outlook RTF got selected in the first place.

Thanks!

I'm glad that helped. I've been bugged with that problem for months. I have to acknowledge that someone from the outlook newsgroups suggested the solution to me. I don't think it's prudent to disclose her name even if I want to acknowledge her. Just wanted to say that I got the solution from someone else. Spread the word because I'm sure we're not the only ones banging their heads on their PCs with this problem.
