Mac Mail

since other programs are apparently OK. A good way to test would be to go to Users and groups in System Preferences, create a new account, allow it to administer the computer, log into it and check. Chances are everything would be OK. If yes, you could migrate your personal data to this account. If not, do some general maintenance, like suggested in the other post.

Difficult to say, but common sources of the problem can be permissions in need of repairing, damage to the file system, a failing HDD, and bad RAM.
