There is no special software required to view the video's on YouTube, I surf up there all the time with no problems.
The link to the particular video would have been nice, can you send it in your next post?
Sometimes new Mac owners get confused about their machines and its capabilities. The fact that the Mac has a UNIX core has no relevance to the average user or to the playing of video on YouTube.
Video on YouTube uses its own player that is part of the YouTube site. All that has to be done, as you know, is click the play button. In an act of desperation, you might get your friend to download Flip4Mac and see if that makes any difference.
You could also tell them to ask their questions directly to the Mac forum.
Look forward to the URL

i sent a friend in the States a link to a video clip on youtube.com, a couple of days later she emailed me:
"Jonah, can you think of any thing [FREE] that would play this video on my MAC? [SOBB] I have Windows media, Real Player and QuickTime [free version] but have no success - could I be doing something wrong?"
i asked her what OS and browser
"Mac uses UNIX and I have OS X3.9 [Panther] and OS X4.5 [Tiger] downstairs. My browsers are Safire [comes with Mac OS] and Firefox by Mozilla. I just don't know how to handle extras on this thing and don't know anyone with a Mac to ask."
as Mac is foreign territory to me, i thought it best to ask the 'experts'
any and all advice will be accepted with many thanks...
