Not all WEP, WPA and WPA2 work with all machines.
What we do however is update our router firmware then our machine and then test for the highest protection we can get without hammering our speed.
At home I use a combo of WEP and MAC filtering (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_filtering ) Which even with the usual toys the attacker fails because even if they crack the WEP they still have to deal with the MAC address. This combo is secure enough in my view today for home use.
I agree the industry could have done better but you can get good security if you put your mind to it.

I have a Powerbook running OS 10.3.9 and I just purchased a Belkin F5D8231-4 (N1) wireless router and I have a static IP address. It took a while for me to get it going and once I did I tried to set up the security features. Unfortunately it would not work once I completed the security setup. The guy at the Belkin helpline told me that the security would not work with a Mac and that I would have to download a patch from Apple. I've looked and can find nothing.
Anyone out there know a fix for this or did I buy the wrong router?
Thanks in advance.
