Question

Mac Anti Virus & Anti Malware

Oct 22, 2016 10:41AM PDT

I know I am likely to get flamed for this but it is an honest question.

Are we well past the point of it being a MUST to install AV/AM on mac's now?

On a related note, I moved my wife to Linux because I was fed up of all the MS targeted viruses, how does Linux fair these days?

Answer might be that it has been a must for a while but from my experience with PC's over the years, AV does slow the system down so if not necessary I would prefer not to bloat the system.

All though your mac is much harder to infect than a pc your not immune.

Google...mac av and check the review sites.
Then it's your call if you want to test a few of these and see what effect they have on perf.

On this pc I tossed out java and flash player....malware magnets...and run avast free.
In multi years I have never seen any malware.
Don't know how folks get that stuff.

There are few active working Apple OS (iOS, MAC OS, OS X) virus. What most of the work the usual Apple Antivirus does is to scan for Windows pests since you don't want to be tagged as "you sent me a virus."

This is partly why most of these suites hammer your Apple's performance.

Install ClamAV and ClamTK the front end for ClamAV and keep it updated, run it once in awhile. It's in all Linux repositories.

I have been running linux for almost 15 years and personally do not use any antivirus or other anti-malware software. I do not see a need for it based on my usage. IMO, if wife does not do torrents, p2p or any other risky behavior while online then one is not needed.
