As you didn't try it the usual way you may be causing this issue. Do not format the drive ahead of the install. Start with a blank HDD with no partitions so the Windows installer can make a partition and format that for you.
XP has deep issues and I'll not duplicate that here but let's do this the old fashioned way (let the installer partition and format.)
We also have to know how you added SATA support. If it's through the BIOS that's good for XP so that's the right answer.

I got my CPU replaced (see here: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7591_102-599444/looking-for-a-cpu-compatible-with/?tag=tracked-disc;track-599444 ).
I wiped my C: (WD5000ADS) and reformatted with NTFS (which is what it had on there in the first place). I put in my Windows install disc (actually an eMachines disk that installs the original software on there).
It boots from CDROM and before the eMachines recovery software starts I get an error message "The requested operation was unsuccessful" and at the heading of the error box it says "lsass.exe - Operation Failed"
I know that's the Sasser worm but how it is on my computer when I have a completely cleaned off HD?
I even took the clean drive, wiped it again, formatted it in FAT32, then reformatted it back to NTFS.
I tried a second NTFS-formatted drive (also a WD5000ADS) and had the same result.
