Question

LSASS endfile format invalid

Aug 10, 2013 1:14AM PDT

Hi all, hope you can help. I downloaded PC Cleaner, ran it and clicked on "FIX ALL" errors. Since then I have not been able to boot up except in safe mode with networking.

I have Win XP home edition. I use AVG anti virus free edition. Computer is only a couple years old. I've tried system restore, I've gone to the MS site and did the registry mod suggested for win 2003/vista. I've tried using the XP disk Recovery console but it asks for the admin password and I'm not aware there is one?

I have recovered all files and photos but hate to have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall and reconfigure everything.

Any ideas on what else I can do?

Clarification Request
This is why we don't tell folk to use such a thing.

As to the ADMIN PASSWORD, that's easy to clear in about 5 minutes with NTPASSWD. So use that to clean the admin password.

If there is no password, just press enter. That's the default, unless you changed it.

Is "PC Cleaner" one of those so called 'optimizers' and 'cleaners'. It's well known they might bring havoc. What errors did you have that needed fixing this way?

What are you planning to do in the recovery console?
If that doesn't help, try a "repair install". That saves all your data, but you must do all Windows updates again.

The 'free' PC Cleaner analysis said I had numerous registry errors that was slowing down my computer. The computer is running very slow so I thought this might help...NOT.

I didn't think there was an admin password so I did press enter but it wouldn't take so there must be. I tried the repair install but ran into the password issue. I'm going to try the NTPASSWD that Bob suggested and try the reinstall.

Thanks, I'll let you all know if this fixed the issue.

As to the original issue that brought on this catastrophe, my internet is running very slow. It's the speed of dial-up. I'm on satellite DSL which has always been pretty fast.

Wow.

Keep in mind these cleaners are the ones that claim these slow down a PC. I've yet to find this to really pay off except to employ my friends in the PC industry (service calls mostly.)
