General discussion

low-light (including indoor) and good HD video quality

Feb 23, 2010 4:51PM PST

I have checked for the past 2 weeks on almost all recent reviews for digital cameras and watched tons of cnet's review video. but now I am getting more and more confused. as each of the 2009 model has good and bad sides and I am just lost.

I want a camera mainly for daily activities, mostly for my kid, so indoor picture quality is important to me. Then I would like to have good HD video quality so that I can record some good moments of her life but no need to carry both digital camera and video camera all the time. I have a budget around $300. so far, general idea after the searching is sony DSC w380 and samsung wb1000. Samsung has good HD video quality, but too many manual setups that I don't think I would have the time to adjust setting everytime. Then Sony dsc 380 is quite new with good price range, but have not read anything about its HD video. Others, got the impression that Panasonic DMC-FZ35 and Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR are also good.

So, any suggestioin would be highly appreciated, I need to get a camera soon as I am starting to feel bad of missing the monments.

Low Light

They have not built the camera you are looking for.

Of all the cameras you mentioned, only the Fujifilm F200EXR has any properties that make it better than Average for low light ability.
And Average low light ability for small cameras is ... Poor.

I don't recommend the Fujifilm F200EXR for you.
Because you said "you don't have the time to adjust settings every-time".

Thank for the inputing

Thanks for the reply, I understood that with manual setting, I will have to choose setting each time before i point and shot. and with that timing, I would already missed the moments.

anyhow, I have set my target to panasonic lumix zx1, like the great zoom and hd quality video.

Kids photos

Don't worry too much about missing the moments, kids have plenty of memorable moments all the time. Taking a little time to get the right settings can be rewarding. Getting a few great shots sometimes is better than having the volume, and can save precious hard disk memory and time to sort the good/bad photos out latter.

When you get HD video, make sure you have enough memory in your computer and backup drives to store them. Hard disks are not as reliable as you want them to be.
