Question

Low fps in almost every game

Sep 22, 2017 11:30PM PDT

Hey guys!
I have a performance problem with almost every mutliplayer game... it always drops to almost 30 when a lot of stuff is going on...
Singleplayer games are fine most of the time tho.
Bf1, Planetside 2, Red Orchestra 2, Escape From Tarkov are almost unplayable even on very low settings... even small games like Robocraft give me trouble...
Strange enough, Star Wars Battlefront runs smooth on Ultra just like Bf1 singleplayer.

specs:
GTX 1060 6GB
i5 4670k OC @4Ghz (+Alpenföhn Broken 2)
DDR3 Ram 8GB 1333Mhz (single channel)
gigabyte z87-d3hp
250GB SSD Samsung 750 Evo
Windows 10

I tried:
Windows 10 full reset
check temps: max 67°C max on 2 of 4 cores
set priority of games to high
unpark cores
Windows 10 game mode on
undo the cpu overclock
set more virtual Ram space

I'm working on a fix since month but I just can't find what seems to be the problem... whats making it even worse, is that al lot of friends have way worse gpu and cpu but still manage to play most of this game without problems.
a friend of mine has almost the exact same rig except of him having 8GB Ram running in dual channel... and he runs all those games smooth on 60fps..
can dual channel have such a huge impact?

I tried a lot some forums already but without a real answer...
It's really driving me insane... I would just buy a new piece of jhardware but I don't even know what the hell is causing the problem...

tell me if I can post something to give you more insight

Do you have the latest bios and drivers for that mobo?
Do you have the latest driver for the gpu?

You might want to think about fitting the machine with better ram.
2x4GB-1600 or 2x8GB-1600

driver

yep Gpu driver should be up to date... had an automatic update from geforce experience just yesterday (version 385.69)

I don't really know how to check if the bios version is up to date...
I'm a little scared of flashing it tbh... don't know if I'd do everything correctly...

sorry for double post...

I Oc'd the ram to run on 1600Mhz already but it's still single channel... so could dual channel potentially have such a huge impact?

I mean we are talking from 30fps or less drops to a stable 60...

Bios

When you power on the machine enter the bios.
It will show what version it is.

Then look here to compare.
https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z87-D3HP-rev-1x#support-dl

Mobo drivers, same gigabyte site, compare what they show to what you have.

If you don't know how to do this stuff have someone do it for you.

The difference between single and dual channel is minor but when your gaming every extra fps helps.

Bios outdated
Sep 23, 2017 6:38AM PDT

Bios is currently on version F4 (F7 seems to be newest)

Mobo was up to date tho...

ye maybe I should get my machine to the hardware store guy and let him do the update...

Answer
Single channel can hurt. Why?
Sep 23, 2017 10:01AM PDT

Because the transfer rate from RAM to GPU takes a hit.

Another common gaffe is the monitor is plugged into the motherboard video. I didn't check your CPU for graphics feature but I always check this.

RAM upgrade inc.

Yeah I just updated the bios myself just now, which has let me increase the overclock a little.
(I saw that dual Bios makes it kind of safe)
this definitely made everything a bit better but I'm still far from what I've expected...

I'll just try to install some 2x 8GB 1600Mhz sticks and tell you if it worked...

how much do those usually go for? like 100€?
