Louisiana boy punished for talking about gay mom

Boy punished for talking about gay mom

LAFAYETTE, Louisiana (AP) -- A 7-year-old boy was scolded and forced to write "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again" after he told a classmate about his lesbian mother, the American Civil Liberties Union alleged Monday.

Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess November 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.

Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint.

A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again."

Sounds to me like the boy was doing perfectly well with his parents' sexual orientation. Pity the same couldn't be said for his teacher or principal.

Yep, "Gay " used to be an excellent happy word
Dec 2, 2003 2:52AM PST

in my generation. Many parents named their daughters Maria Gay, Lisa Gay, etc..
It used to be that Gay was not associated at all with homosexuals, the word was commonly used by many people including movie stars to denote happiness....anyone recall the movie with Zorro titled "The Gay Caballero".
As I recall, up until the early part of the 60's, "*****" (Webster's - differing in some odd way from what is usual or normal) was commonly used. Then someone, or it could have been a group, started using the word "Gay" as the definition was more appealing than "*****".

Thumper, well it has been used in SE to denote someone 'bible thumping'. Again Webster's - "to make a vigorous endorsement". Thumper could be used to denote anyone vigorously endorsing former Pres. Clinton.

Now it is a bit too PC extreme...

but one has to admit and admire their persistence in gaining acceptance.

"Don we now our gay apparel..."

I do wonder, however, ...
Dec 2, 2003 4:34AM PST

... if the same degree of outrage would be directed towards the other kid if he/she had replied with "but that's a sin" or whatever.

If the facts are as the complaint states, then this was a totally inappropriate response. Then too, are the innumerable accounts of little boys being accused of sexual harrassment for pulling a girl's pigtails, kids being suspended for going "bang bang" with their fingers, kids being forbidden to say a prayer in the cafeteria before lunch, etc. Perhaps there is a language code that forbids the use of the word, period. Kinda like the n-word, or -- gasp! -- God.

I'm for open dialog in both directions. Unfortunately, as evidenced in this and other threads, anything short of open endorsement of all aspects of homosexuality gets one labeled a homophobe and derided. If it's not OK for person A to "discriminate" against person B for engaging in homosexual sex, then it's equally not OK for person B to "discriminate" against a person A and ridicule them for being celibate, or deeply religious, or loud, or shy, or whatever.

This isn't directed at you Toni so much at this whole issue and the saturation.

GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY

There! outta my system.

Just this past weekend beginning with Harvey Feurstein being Mrs. Claus at the Macy's T'giving day parade and continuing through all the movies, sitcoms, news reports, etc. of the weekend, everything it seemed was "gay this and gay that". Now I don't segregate myself from the general population, but in my daily life I just don't have to deal with this issue on a non-stop basis ad nauseum. Enough already!

Isn't it nice that Dale works with two PEOPLE that LOVE each other? Isn't LOVE the most important to you too? To me LOVE is life! A life without LOVE is no life! Or how do you feel about it, James?

I love my daughters but don't feel compelled to have sex with them in order to prove it. I love my mother but don't feel some ***** compulsion to have sex with her to prove it. I can love my fellow man but don't feel some odd compulsion to play around in his underwear to prove it. I guess if I was perverted I might feel a compulsion to do any or all of the above, but it wouldn't be due to Love, but rather a perversion. To say that Love is the driving force behind Perversion is false since a true Love for those persons would abhor the perversion thereof.

What is love, James...
Dec 4, 2003 3:41PM PST

Tricky word, James, love. Perhaps we should consider two definitions, love, as when I say that I love something like shrimp vs. LOVE when I say that I want another to legally link with me thru marriage.
More than once, a young kid talked to me about asking another kid to marry them. I've had both male and female kids ask me my thoughts on such a union.
I always ask the same question and make the same personal analysis. I pose the question of - If that person were to be hit by a truck, or have other such accident, and as a result they could never have "sex" again, would you still feel the same desire to marry them?. If they say no, I tell them it's not "LOVE", it's just "LUST". But, if they say yes, I say that it may, I say again, may, be "LOVE". Further analysis of motive would be in order. Hopefully it would show that it was the "real thing".
One-line summation, "LOVE" is when another person's hapiness is essential to your own.
Note: "T-types", hapiness/LOVE does not automatically mean imposition of all current legal benefits/liabilities of Marriage and the other legal baggage that it automatically imposes, which is another ball of wax.

No J. Not at all. James keep making assertions all based around
Dec 4, 2003 5:53PM PST

what is perverted behaviour.

If he doesn't tell us what he considers perversion, then how in the heck can the reader know the bases of his quite strenuously expressed opinions.

Take incest.

Dad and daughter shouldn't have a kid - bad genetically. If they have sex and use pregnancy prevention, then genetically it is all right.

Dad shouldn't misuse his power and disturb his daughter by having sex with her. Its a form of violence, and can and often does cause mental harm.

What if Dad's 50, daughter 30, and she chooses to have sex with her father. There is no genetic damage. There is no psychological damage.

I expect most people would say that all three situations are bad. But in fact its the conscious choice of an adult, and no one else's business.

So, what does James see as perversion.

incest=sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry

as this thread seems to hinge on male homosexuality, try this for size...

what is perverted behaviour.

Take incest.

Dad and son can't have a kid - impossible genetically. If they have sex and use disease prevention, then
medically it is all right.

Dad shouldn't misuse his power and disturb his son by having sex with him. Its a form of violence, and can and often does cause mental harm.

if your response to my post is "but who decides?" without giving an opinion, the conclusion has to be "charlie says, if it's love, then it's ok"...

is that your opinion charley? if a father/son relationship causes no pain, no disease and is "born out of love", is that acceptable to you?

Your only statement about me in your post was "and charlie will STILL ask "who decides?""

So there was no question... I am still curious about your response to what I "STILL ask" though...

PS. You managed to spell my name correctly (although with lower case "c") in the quote above. Please continue to spell it that way when you direct a post to me but with capital "C". Thank you.
