whatsoever as to the rights or otherwise of homosexuals.
Kiddpeat said the certain words were a derogation of Christians. The response was that the words were a DESCRIPTION of the behaviours of certain believers, be they Christians, Republicans, Caluthumpians or devils.
Ian
Saying that the term Bible Thumper is based upon behavior is right in a literal sense, but it is also linked to belief. Ian, I grew up in the "Deep South" in the U.S., you grew up in Oz.
The term comes from the very common thing that many "fire and brimstone" preacher types do when they are giving their sermons. They hold a bible in one hand, and slap it with the other hand (usually quite forcefully) when they make a point. This is especially true when they are quoting a specific chapter and verse as the basis of their point. This common physical hitting (thumping, in southern slang) makes the reason for the nickname obvious.
Also, it is also linked to belief, as they use the literal word of the Bible as proof of the point(s) that they are making in their sermons. Ian, you have to have to have seen one in action. They will say that "X" is wrong, as it says in the Bible, (or "Good Book", depending on personal style) because (slapping/thumping the Bible with their free hand) it says in some selected chapter and verse that..... Note: the voice is almost always raised, many times to a feverish pitch and/or volume and the "thumping" is quite forcefull.
It seems antithetical to the concept of the Holiness of God's Word. In Jewish faith you would never see someone "slap" or "thump" a Torah to make a point, or at least I've never heard of that. I think the thumping must have developed as a style of preaching, probably to call attention to the source of their doctrine. I rarely see it anymore, but I'm sure in areas it is still quite the rage. More often I see someone hold up the bible when quoting a verse as if to show the authority of their point being made. I think of Moses making God's point in the wilderness and then striking the rock to make the water flow, then getting in trouble over that. Very often scripture is placed on transparencies for overhead projectors and I just had a humorous thought about someone "thumping" on that!
Some very close friends are Pentecostals, they talked me into attending the opening of their new church. I detected the use of 14 cycle sound from very LARGE speakers to induce fear, and pheromone pumps placed all over the ceiling.
My brother and his wife are extreme fundamentalist Christians, and John is quite an effective lay preacher.
I've also attended political rallies and watch politicans use the same techniques. Football coaches do the same.
Ian
You detected the use of 14 cycle sound? My, but you certainly carry about some fancy equipment. And I thought that I overdid it with some of the stuff that I carried about when I was playing audio engineer. I did carry a 60Hz audio generator, though.
Its easy to detect the use of subsonics to generate fear.
1) Get a piece of thin plastic - school book covers are great.
2) Make a cone.
3) Make a loose plasric cover.
4) Using an elastic band, place a paper clip over the cover.
5) Point the cone at any suspicious speakers or idenitifed 'thin' wall coverings that are visibly "blurred".
The paper clip will create a vibrating sound, very similar to a kettle drum. We learnt that in high school music class: making detectors to identify in-tune and out of tune musical instruments.
Ian
Ian, are you sure that you're not detecting the carrier "hum" of the power supply that powers the speakers (50Hz there,AIR) and/or a harmonic rather than some form of "mind control"? Note: "beating" together 2 tones yields 4 different ones, but that may be technical overanalysis looking for a supposed 14 Hz tone.
Ian, RE: your high school music class. How does that "detector" tell you that that instrument is "in tune"? If I were to mis-tune a guitar string that should be a "C" to a different frequency, would that "detector" react to that fairly "pure" vibration of that string, even though it was mis-tuned?
Now then, if I had a trumpet player hit and hold a "C" note and held up a tuning fork tuned to produce a "C", that might be a posibility if when that player stopped, I placed that fork against a table, and heard a "C" tone. But, that assumes that trumpet player properly played a "C". Trying that with a "C" on a piano would be a better source for that experiment, as it eliminates the maxium amount of human player error.
You'd tighten or loosen the rubber band, until the paper clip vibrated along with a tuning fork.
BTW, if you have lots of fillings in your teeth, you can feel a 14 Hz sound at high volume. It makes the teeth ache when your mouth is open.
Ian
But, Ian, if you had the tuning fork, why would you go thru the bother of that other nonsense?
Your response seems to indicate that that kiddie construction was somehow (I assume by experimentation) "tuned" so that it would vibrate to the frequency of that tuning fork. (Or 14Hz, for that "mind control" accusation). The problem with this senario is that any physical change (easy to do do with such a kiddie device) would alter the frequency to which it vibrated. The metal tuning fork is "fixed" physically in the frequency ro which it responds. Of course, altering that frequency via a file or other such intense physical means would seem to be much harder than changing the physical properties of the make-shift kiddie device that you described.
the mental image that brought to mind. How do you keep the bugs out? ![]()
Thumpers are those that wish to force their beliefs, morals and ideals onto everyone based on their bible and interpratations of the words within.
... their beliefs that homosexuality is moral and proper should be called ... HOMOTHUMPERS! LOL
I think part of the problem with this issue is that anyone who expresses any objection to homosexuality or associated behaviors is immediately labeled a homophobe regardless of the origin of those beliefs. It seems perfectly acceptible to attach that derogatory label. Anyone who dares intimate even a hint of religious component to that belief becomes a Bible thumper and is discounted as a religious fanatic. What the activists seeking complete legitimacy and acceptance of homosexuality don't realize (or rather will not admit) is that their's is an agenda and belief system too. Much of the "hate" perceived is in reaction to the in-your-face nature of the radical activists who are just as vocal in trying to impose their own version of morality on the majority.
I think lots of Christians get just as angry and/or annoyed with those of other sects -- e.g. Jehovah's Witnesses -- showing up on their doorsteps preaching eternal damnation for those who don't heed their beliefs as they do having homosexuality and secular humanism thrust at them at every turn.
If the goal is truly to get rid of government intervention in private lives, then the entire social safetynet must be reprivatized. Then no adult has any more or few rights based on whatever association they wish to have with another adult of whatever sex. But any time I mention this, the socialist within the homothumper raises up and insists that is not relevant. Well, it is.
I still think that when the facts come out, this issue about use of the term "gay" in school will come down to some sort of speech code thing. If it's not OK for the individual to express religious beliefs re: homosexuality -- having been arbitrarily now considered to be hate speech -- then all discussion must be limited. You can't limit only one point of view and that's what is happening in K-12 and even more increasingly on college campuses every day.

Hi, KP.
Actually, it may not be the last socially acceptable form of bigotry -- though formally illegal (when acted upon), bigotry against wiccans, atheists and others with out-of-the-mainstream religious beliefs is also tolerated. Anti-Christian bigotry is no more tolerated than is anti-Semitism -- it's just that there is a sizeable minority of holier-than-thou Christians who long for the days when everyone was forced to say, or at least listen to, their prayers at the start of school, sporting events, etc.

Hi, Jonah.
>>you think 'teachers and principals' are supposed to leave their values and ideals outside the school walls?<<
If those values and ideals teach that wghites are better than Blacks, men are better than women, Christians are better than any other religion (or lack thereof), or Republicans are better than Democrats, then teachers are indeed from prohibited from indoctrinating their students with those values. Why should it be any different with the notion that homosexuals are ipso facto evil and degenerate, as has been occasionally stated and often implied on this board in the last few weeks? If the teachers feel honor-bound to state that belief openly in class or in an official capacity, then they should resign. -- Dave K.

if those values and ideals teach that wghites are better than Blacks,(if you live in the South?) men are better than women,(in a rural area where 'men' work 12-14 hour days?) Christians are better than any other religion (in the bible belt?)(or lack thereof), or Republicans are better than Democrats, (or thew opposite?) then teachers are indeed from prohibited from indoctrinating their students with those values (what else can they talk about?)
teachers are not 'programmed' to put aside their beliefs, values or their own personal 'I Believe' when they walk through the door....they will teach the kids the values of the area they live in? if 'nigra' is an "accepted" word, it will be used, if "queers" go against the grain in that particular town/county thats what the kids will grow up knowing....
right or wrong? i don't know.....
...it's not the one I linked. The article does not say anything about the word "*****." It specifically states that he used the word "gay":
A teacher who heard the remark scolded Marcus, telling him "gay" was a "bad word" and sending him to the principal's office. The following week, Marcus had to come to school early and repeatedly write: "I will never use the word 'gay' in school again."
Nice try though.
and if you had read what I wrote (as well as the article" you would have noted that ONLY phrases from the COMPLAINT were quoted and the accuracy of such is in dispute even as a complaint is written--that is why it progresses from complaint to trial.
What was NOT quoted from the complaint Josh?
Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," .... Tommy says "My sister likes Linda, but I don't think she is gay." Marcus says "No, but if they only like other girls they are ***** and that makes them gay." Tommy says "Sometimes I think my sister is ***** but she likes me and George." Marcus, "No stupid, if they are ***** and only like girls they are lesbians and one acts like..." Teacher shows up and calls for a stop...
Without actual FACT any conjecture is possible and just as likely to be correct.
I'm using the information I have. You are pulling things out of your imagination, which is exactly what Timmy did with his Disney post.
