loud fan noise on my Mac OS X

Does anyone know how to help me turn off the very loud fan sound coming from my 2009 Mac OS X?

OS X is not a model, it's an Operating System.

That would be a bad idea.

The fan is not an optional item. When things get warm the fan runs to cool them off. If someone did disable the fan the machine would not last long.

You didn't write if the fan noise changed over time so let's go with what you asked and not guess if you left out a detail.

If you have an iMac then it is possible that the fan activity is caused by blocked inlet vents. Reduced air flow causes the fan to increase speed because some components get hotter. Get a vacuum cleaner on the weakest suction and suck out any fluff from the inlet vent located on the bottom side of the iMac. A soft brush can sometimes work but you run the risk of pushing the fluff into the iMac.
If your Mac is not an iMac then you need to provide model details, the version of the operating system, whether the fan is on all the time or only sometimes, etc before we can offer help.
