Question

Lots of new build PC issues

Sep 2, 2015 2:31PM PDT

Firstly I’m new here and this is my first post; granted there are soo many problems with this pc please accept my apology if it is in the wrong part of the forum! But if anyone has even the smallest of suggestions it will be greatly appreciated!
I recently put my new computer together back in July and have been having several small issues to the point that it is now beginning to bug me, they are as follows:
1) The PC is randomly turning on when the PSU is left turned and plugged in.
2) At random times I will hear the hardware disconnect/reconnect noise as if a piece of hardware is quickly being unplugged and plugged back in again
3) The front usb3.0 ports on my case do not function well with my usb3.0 pen drive – when copying files it stops mid-way through the process then the device becomes inaccessible and has to be removed and placed into the usb2.0 port for it to function
4) The optical disk drive randomly disappears from my computer and as a result does not physically work/respond when the open button on the front of the disk drive is pushed until the PC has been restarted
Recently I got a new processor and motherboard as part of an RMA and updated the graphics card. The system uses an SSD to boot to windows and a HDD for storage, yet another problem is that there seems to be delayed boot times unless the system is doing a cold boot. I have messed around with this slightly (experimenting with different BIOS settings) and the system will not boot to the SSD without the HDD being plugged into the motherboard – even though the HDD is not responsible for the boot.
The system spec is:
Motherboard – Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5
Processor – Intel i5 4590 3.3GHz
Memory – Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600MHz
SSD – Kingston 120GB SSDNow
HDD – Seagate 1TB 7200RPM 6Gb/s
GFX – Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970
PSU – Corsair CX600W V2 ’80 Plus Bronze’

Answer
You are repeating many prior finds.

The one about the front USB ports is a classic. Many front ports are nonoperational or can only run at reduced speeds. If you feel that's a case defect, then you RMA and try another.

As to the random boot, the motherboard maker needs to address that. There are wake on this, that and more.

Then my Windows 10 machine woke Tuesday. Turns out that's expected.

As to the boot without the HDD, did you install WIndows without the HDD plugged in? You may have inadvertently had the HDD on a lower SATA port number than the SSD. A lot of folk don't know how to build a PC today.

Answer
Try this

1( make sure that in your bios and settings you have it set not to allow mouse or keyboard or anypart to "wake" up your pc

2( try cleaning your parts very well it may be dust getting on the pin connectors and moving around

3( somone already answered this

4( get a new disc drive (disk= magnetic disc= laser

and about the boot problem try looking at your bio's boot priority and make sure that you disable other ways of booting unless installing a new operating system
