Lost Windows XP Password

May 16, 2005 4:36AM PDT

My Windows XP password has expired and I can not gain access. I don't have a disk as a back up. Is there any way to get around this screen? Possibly through a generic admin password?

A few exits.

1. If this is XP Home (you didn't tell), boot SAFE MODE and login as administrator. If the installer did it right, you press the enter key for the password.

2. http://www.lostpassword.com has a tool to reset the password.

3. I can not endorse or mention NTPASSWD since some have lost it all using it. That's all I write about that.

4. You can always boot up your KNOPPIX CD and copy out those 2 files you forgot to backup. KNOPPIX is found with google.com

5. If you can't accomplish the above, it's likely you'll have to wipe the drive and start over.

Safe mode

Bob,

Thanks for the response. Would it be possible that the system would not let me boot up in safe mode? I tried that and hitting f8 and it would not work. You are correct though, this is a home edition.

Possible. Try this.

After the first flashes of the screen, press and hold down the F8 key.
