Lost Windows Mail Shortcut

Apr 3, 2007 2:29AM PDT

Somewhere along the way, the shortcut to Windows Mail has disappeared. When I started to set up e-mail on my wife's laptop, I couldn't find any e-mail program. I went to help and searched for Outlook Express. One of the answers was "Where is Outlook Express", I clicked on it and it says that OUtlook Express has been replaced by Windows Mail and there's a link to it. Great!

I set up an account and it works OK except there's no shortcut. I can't find the program winmail.exe to create a shortcut. The only way I can find the program is to go through the help sequence again.

The properties of the link says it's in programfiles directory. Of course, the displayed directory is Program Files with a space. Where the heck is this directory?

Help.....!! (please)

Look here...

You should find it by going Computer->Local Disk->Program Files->Windows Mail. (Also known as C:\Program Files\Windows Mail to those more familiar with previous versions of Windows.) Just right-click WinMail.exe, select copy, and then right-click and select Paste Shortcut in the desired location, such as on the desktop.

I looked there

Thanks for responding.

The problem is that the only executables in that directory are wab.exe, wabmig.exe and WindowsMailGadget.exe, none of which is the Windows Mail executable. That's what I'm trying to find...the executable so's I can make a shortcut.

Also, a search shows up these two executables and that's all.

The help file when Outlook Express is searched for says "Where is Outlook Express?" When you click on it, you get a link and the source says: class="shellExecuteLink" href=shortcut:&quit;%25programfiles%25/windows mail/winmail.exe"e; title="Click to open Windows Mail"

When I click the link, it opens Windows Mail.

I wonder what the 25 means.

Did you check hidden files?
Apr 5, 2007 2:03PM PDT

Windows Mail is obviously installed, and from the link appears to be in the correct location. My guess is that it has been made a hidden file, and thus is not turning up. Open Computer and go Organize->File and Search Options->View and select "Show hidden files and folders." OK your way out and then try browsing to that location again. You can also try Windows + F, then clicking the Advanced button to the right hand side and checking the box to include hidden files in the search.

If it still doesn't turn up, another solution is to right-click your desktop and select New->Shortcut. In the target field, copy-and-paste %programfiles%/windows mail/winmail.exe and click OK. The Windows Mail icon should be displayed for the shortcut within seconds, and double-clicking it should launch the application.

Hope this helps,
John

I found it

It's a little different than you say, but you got me on the right track. Pasting the info from the link wouldn't work. It still couldn't find the file. Going to Computer, Folder and Search Options and View, the "Show hidden files and folders" was selected, but a couple lines below was "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" was selected. I unchecked it and the winmail.exe showed up in the Program Files directory and I made a shortcut.

Thanks for helping.
