Before you do this, read the entire message. You will probably need your Win 98 install disk or your restore disk from Dell. (Sometimes you do, sometimes not- it seems to depend on the computer.
The easiest way to do this is to go to the control panel. Click on system, then go to the device manager tab and open the device manager. Scroll down to sound devices and click once. What wil show is the listing for your sound card. Click on it to highlight it. At the bottom of the window is a box that says "remove", Click on it. This will remove all of your sound equipment. Reboot your computer. When it reboots, windows will find your sound card and controls and reinstall them. At this point, the computer may ask for your Win 98 disk. When you have gotten back to your desktop, you should see the volume control back on the taskbar.
my son inadvertanly deleted somehow the volume controls on my dell, windows 98 desktop. when i go to multimedia in the control panel and click to show volume controls on the taskbar it says it is not installed and go to add/remove programs. from there i am totally lost as i am kinda new to computers. can anyone help an old dog learn new tricks? patrick
