Question

Lost videos on Canon camcorder?

Mar 14, 2015 2:23PM PDT

Hi all... I have a Canon Vixia HFR50 camcorder. It is only a few months old. I have recorded a number of videos of my newborn daughter. Today I went to pull them off to my laptop, but there are no videos. The camcorder's hard drive says 6.5GB of used space, and only 800MB free. They have to be on here somewhere! Any ideas?

My laptop has windows 8...

trying to "pull them off to the laptop"?

The Canon HF R50 has no "hard drive" so I presume you are referring to the built-in 8 gig of available flash memory. Using an Explorer window probably won't work.

The camera's operating system and your computer's operating system may not get along. One method is to follow the instructions in the manual:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300013657/02/hfr50-52-500-im2-n-en.pdf
Page 105. Transferring the video from the internal memory to a computer. Apparently installation of the "Transfer utility" is needed for this sort of copying. Check the Software tab at the Canon HR 50 product site under Software. Hopefully the Windows software includes the transfer LE part.

Another option that should work is by using a video editor that can deal with importing this video from the camcorder. MovieMake is supposed to be bundled with Windows 8. With the camcorder connected to the computer with a USB cable ind the computer in USB/computer mode, launch WMovieMaker and try yo Import or capture the video... Let us know what happens.

Good luck!
