Lost Timing on '92 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Oct 14, 2007 5:18AM PDT

I have lost the timing on my '92 Eclipse and can't seem to get it back.

It has the 1.8L non-turbo. It has spark (after I replaced the distributor) and the engine turns over nicely, but won't even try to start. I have tried to follow all the instructions from the Hayne's and Chilton's manuals, but I just can't get it to work. It is getting fuel because I can see gasoline on the plugs after I have tried to start it for awhile.

I think I need to set the timing from scratch, but I am have zero luck .... any ideas?

Maybe you should try

You must be sure you're at TDC for the ballpark area of getting spark firing at the right time when remounting distributor. You didn't mention why you replaced distrubutor, but or if that was the problem to begin with. If not, then be sure if belt cam driven its not worn or loose or even broken, inspect. If you had a broken belt, replace find TDC and then play with distributor, you should get lousy firing until tweeked-in. As for spark, be sure its hot spark and not a weak one. Those are my guesses. -----Willy Happy

Thanks for the reply!

Hmm... I replaced the distributor because the built-in electrical connections were broken off, and I was unable to order replacement parts, so I had to get a replacement distributor. The belt was not broken. I removed it according to the instructions in the repair manual, but the oil pump cam was spun during removal and timing was lost.

hehehe...the spark was definitely a 'hot' spark, as I got the crap zapped out of me while moving the disributor rotor (forgot to disconnect the power first - doofy me Happy

Still hoping for a detailed answer from some Mitsubishi pro or enthusiast out there hehehe.
