Lost Sound / Windows XP

Jan 14, 2005 2:21AM PST

I'm not sure what I did, but I don't have sound anymore...it's not on mute either. I think I might have adjusted something in My Computer, but can't figure it out. I did a sound test and they are working? Any suggestions?

Thanks.. Irene

Lost sound
Jan 16, 2005 2:27AM PST

That has happened to me on 2 different pc's, on the hp, it was because i had plugged the speaker plug in the mic jack on the back(how stupid of me!), the eMachines was hooked up right and still no sound. I am curious to know tha fix for this problem too. Hopefully somebody smarter than me knows how to fix it.

Left Channel sound lost in XP com.
Jan 16, 2005 12:51PM PST

Hi Irene.
I also lost the left channel and no reason why! All the controls are proper and still no sound. If you do happen to get a solution to the problem, I would appreciate it if you would let me know how it is corrected, I was getting ready to get another MB as I thought it may be bad. Maybe I'll just try to find the drivers (no sound card, sound on mb), if they are available.
Thanks
Roy

I occasionally have to get the Creative SoundBlaster disk out and re-install the drivers. I have no idea how the information escapes my computer. Maybe the data is seeping through the cracks in the cabinet. I'll have to really torque down the screws on the cabinet some day and see if that helps Happy If you have the disk for your particular audio program, you may be able to pop it into the drive and find a "Repair" or Drivers" option and try to re-install it. I'm sure one of the more informed people here will be able to help you soon.

Did you install some new device?
Jan 21, 2005 6:52AM PST

Hi,
as someone already posted above more informations about your problem would be very helpful. For instance: did you lost your sound soon after freshly installing windows and were installing drivers? Did you install a new device (ex: Bluetooth audio device - I had problems with xp and a device like that)?
So....if the problem is stil there more informations are crucial.

Lost sound AND new devices
Jan 28, 2005 1:50AM PST

Since getting telewest broadband installed on the 17th Jan 05 I am constantly losing the sound and the task bar turns grey instead of blue. The only way I have found so far to rectify this is by restoring the PC to an earlier date (start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore) unfortunately this only works for a day or two and then I have to do it again and I am running out of patience. Also causes problems when I don't want to restore. Any other suggestions would be great. Device manager reckons everything is ok and I have came to the conclusion this is a virus of some sort that isn't being picked up.

A suggestion
Jan 29, 2005 9:03AM PST

I'm not familiar with the telewest broadband but I can make some suggestions. If you have Service pack 2 on your XP this causes some problems with some vendor drivers. I had the problem with sound after installing bluetooth audio device. With SP2 I couldn't install specific drivers but windows installed generic drivers (the effect was I lost sound). The sollution for me was not to use SP2. If this is not the case you should check your Input and Output Audio Device after using the device you installed to see if there is your sound card listed there or XP did not do the proper change and sound is still controlled by the device just used and now unplugged or shut down. Then try to change back on your sound card to see if this solves it.If so than the problem is in your audio device drivers and one sollution is to contact your vendor or see your vendor's web page.
Hope this helps.

Re: Lost Sound

Check this: Start-Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-Volume Control. Open the volume control And Expand to show all. Check the line out AND the WAVE volume. You will not get any sound if the WAVE is turned down or muted. Uncheck all muted items. Set all controls to medium volume. Recheck sound. If this does not work and you have a sound blaster card do the same with its controls. If this still does not work go to the device properties control panel and uninstall ONLY your sound card, reboot and reinstall card drivers. If you go into the device properties you can uninstall the card without physically removing it. If you need to occasionaly reinstall your drivers then copy your sound card disk to thic file:C:/windows/TEMP If you need to reinstall or refresh the drivers again use the hardware wizard and point to this file. Hope this helps. I use Windows ME and have limited xp knowledge.
