I deal with such by installing the motherboard and audio drivers. Sadly, I can't tell you much more than this given your posting.

The speaker icon has nothing to do with actual working of the sound card, which you can enter the control panel, go into sound and game controllers, go into the properties of your sound card item listed, and simply check the box to show the icon in systray. If the sound is working you have no issue.

Another option if the sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster series, you can go to the creative program file menu item, then into restore defaults. Once you click it it will restore your sound card's original settings, and sometimes ask to reboot to complete the setting change.

check the sound card is seated properly on the motherboard, I know its not exactly a 2k problem, but its happened to me, where the card is screwed in, but the case has been knocked over and its become loose inside the case..
