Lost shared files - not in recycle bin

by yaffid / May 3, 2007 5:29 AM PDT

I recently deleted all of my shared files through a file-sharing program that I loaded onto my computer. I need to get them back however they were not in my recycle bin and my recycle bin's "restore items" button is not available for me to click. What should I do? How can I get all of my songs back? I have Vista Premium.

Shared files as in...
by John.Wilkinson / May 4, 2007 9:06 AM PDT

Shared files as in files shared on your network, files shared between users on a single computer, or shared files as in P2P file sharing over the internet? Each case needs to be treated differently. Also, what program were you using? I'll be honest and say chances are not that great of a full recovery, so I hope the files weren't too important/irreplaceable.

Let us know.

Hi John,

I had a ton of music in my shared folder from limewire, which I deleted out of my limewire library without knowing that the files would automatically be deleted from my shared folder. When I tried to retrieve them from the recycle bin they were not there and my itunes aren't any good without the original music files. Just to test out my recycle bin I deleted another file and checked my recycle bin for it and it did but when I removed it I could not restore that file either.

Thanks for helping

File recovery software...

I'm not a Limewire user myself so I can't say for sure, but it may have a setting to automatically bypass the Recycle Bin when you delete files. (You can also change the Recycle Bin settings to automatically do that for all files regardless of deletion method.)

The only solution would be to try using file recovery software to resurrect the files from the hard drive. The chances of a successful recovery dwindle over time, however, for as you use your computer they may be overwritten.

If the music was legal (not copyrighted/pirated) I would just redownload may actually be easier to do so. Otherwise I'd recommend purchasing the songs through Napster, Rhapsody, Walmart Music, etc.

Good luck.

I've been loading my cds now because those stick instead of downloading because this is one big headache. Thanks for your time though.
