Lost profile

Sometimes when I power up my Windows XP-Pro comes up without my settings and looks like a newly installed system. I Restart the machine and my settings are found. Anyone have any suggestions ?

Microsoft shares how to move to another account at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

As a pre-emptive answer Microsoft does NOT offer why this happens or a tool to repair such an issue. They have for over a decade offered this as their workaround.
