lost photos

I have a seagate external and transferred my photos to it and did a full system restore on my pc. Sony vaio with xp. And when I connected the external drive everything is gone. Is there a way to retrieve the lost pics? Please help

1. How did you 'transfer' them?
2. Are you sure they were there after copying? Did you see them in Windows Explorer/My Computer? Could you open them?
3. Are you sure they are gone now? Can you see the folder you copied them to? Is it gone also? Is it empty?

seeing the Seagate external drive ? Is there a driver for the Seagate which you need to install? Which version of XP? No SP ? SP 2 ? SP 3 ? Are the USB ports enabled ?
