lost files 2

I just posted the "Lost Files" question. Tried to edit it, but couldn't. Wanted to add: I decided to check my Seagate external backup, thinking, well I'll find the labels in there.
Nope! Go figure? How can files go missing in an external drive that is not left hooked up unless I'm backing up something?
