Lost External Drive in Win2k

My pc was accidentily unplugged without shutting down
yesterday. Now Windows will not display the external hard drive in explorer. In the disks management utility it is listed as "unrecognized". It is listed as connected in the usb plug-in icon on the bottom right.

Should I uninstall the device and then reinstall?

It is a Maxtor USB 2.0 external drive.
