Use System Restore to before the crash.

YPAGER is not a windows XP component so toss it out.

Then a test of said drives.

Sometimes the crash was the side effect of the CD drive failing. Here's my quick acid test...

Boot the restore CD.

DO NOT RESTORE the OS. Just see if the CD drive boots said CD.

The test is... to see if a bootable CD boots.

Just use any bootable CD that doesn't muck with the installed OS.

Sadly, without the XP CD, the outlook is GRIM. You may want to migrate to an OS that you can support. Drivers for most Compaqs are still at Compaq.com
