Lost downloaded file

Mar 3, 2004 1:50AM PST

When I download a program I receive it as a: .exe.bmp file
and the following message:
"C:\Windows\Temp\(programe name).exe.bmp
Could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.
Sorry bout that. Try saving to disk first and then opening the file".
At this point I can not find the file on my computer.
I am using Netscape 7.01 on a Windows ME system.
Any ideas how to help. 03-03-04
Thanks,,,,,,,,,, Jim Gordon jimgordon@texoma.com

Jim, Are You Sure ???
Mar 3, 2004 2:32AM PST

...that the file was called "(program name).exe.bmp" with TWO file extensions?? That's normally not a good thing as many viruses will use two file extensions. Where did you get this file? A "program" installer file would be downloaded as a ".exe" file, or maybe a ".zip" file, but not as a ".bmp" file which is a picture file.

Did you scan the file with a current antivirus program FIRST...BEFORE attempting to open the file? If you didn't, at this time, it would be prudent to do a FREE online scan using either of the two links below:

Housecall Online Scanner

Panda Online Scanner

Have you done a search for the program name using your computer's "search" tool?

Hope this helps and let us know what you find.

Grif,,,,, Thanks very much for your responce.
No I did not scan for a virus first. You are Soooo Right, I should have.
I just now, (14:50 C.T.), tried to run "Housecall online Scanner". I don't know happened, all it did was send my computer back to the Windows start up page. Is this the way it should work?
The last program I tried to download was last night. I bought 3 programs from: TemplateZONE.com . HTTPS:www.digitalriver.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Master and it downloaded to: C:\Windows\temp\wpsetup.exe.BMP I believe it did download some place because it took over 90 minutes to do so.
I used my Start,,, Search for file & folders feature--No Luck,,, I manually looked all over the computer- No Luck
I've had this problem for about the last 7 or 8 download attempts. I don't understand why this all came about. Thank you very much,, Jim Gordon

Jim,

Housecall isn't supposed to work that way. Try the Panda link although it does take longer to run the scan.Since there are a few viruses which change the file extension to a .bmp, I recommend getting that virus scan done before doing much else.

When doing a search, can you type in "wpsetup" and find something?

ARe you using a "download accelerator/manager" of some sort? The "digitalRiver" company can sometimes cause that download problem when using their "Extended Download Service". If you monitor the "Save As" window before the download, you should know where the file is being placed. When attempting the download, can you RIGHT click on the link, choose "Save Target As", then save the file to a folder on your computer? Sometimes that will get it done.

Hope this helps.

I tried Housecall again today, same results, closed all programs I had open and went to start up page. I tried Panda, but it only works on the MS browser and I use Netscape. I've tried to convinse myself to change browsers, but you know how Texans are.
I tried "wpsetup" and got 3 pages of links. I don't know what I was suppose to be looking for.
I don't believe I'm useing a "download accelerator", I don't remember ever installing one.
The download windows says it is going to: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\(program name).exe.bmp. When I try to open it, it trys to open as a WORD file and ofcourse it is just garbage.
I've tried to save it on my D drive with a CD burner and "save as",no luck either way. I've never seen the "Save Target As", but I'll look for and try it.
Thanks for your ideas and time. I'll keep trying untill I'm forced to give up and deep 6 this thang and get a pencil and yellow note pad. Jim Gordon

Netscape and IE
Mar 4, 2004 4:51PM PST

1. You might be using Netscape regularly, but you should have IE working enough to use Windowsupdate. So I don't fully see why you can't use it for Panda. Windowsupdate, of course, is necessary, so IE is necessary.

2. I didn't follow this tread, but did you use all 5 of Bob Proffitts anti-parasite suite? See http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=14326&messageID=162126 as a reference to it (Bob writes so about 10 times a day on different forums).

3. Just to try: how is downloading in IE?

4. Did you try to uninstall and reinstall Netscape?

5. A simple work around might be to simply rename the file to the correct extension in Explorer.

6. Just a beside: why do you open a bitmap with Word? Paint is the default, some photo-editing software steals the extension. But MS Word doesn't.

7. No need to throw the computer out of the window. A reinstall of the OS should suffice (and save you money to buy pencils and paper).

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your associations are all fouled up...
Mar 5, 2004 5:22AM PST

locate your SHELL.INF file inside your \Windows\INF\ directory, right click on it and select INSTALL. It will reset all your file associations to the installation defaults.

Since it is MUCH quicker I would recommend doing this before doing a reinstallation.
