Lost Control Panel

Apr 20, 2005 1:34AM PDT

I have lost the following programs on ME. System Restore won't come up. No icons appear in control panel or when you click on C drive. I am doing a virus check. It found a couple of Trojans and healed them. I did a scan disk and defrag in safe mode. Any ideas? The icons do appear in safe mode.

That healing does not repair the trojan damage.

Many are amazed that virus/trojan/spyware removal does not heal the machine.

About all one can do if they can't cure the machine is to backup what they can't lose and start over.

In your case I'd see if TWEAKUI can be used to unhide the Control Panel items. If the trojan deleted the files needed for the control panel then a reinstall of the OS (which I don't supply in these forums since it's been discussed far too many times) may replace the missing files.

It's a shame Microsoft was so confident about Windows ME that it omitted the SFC tool.

Windows ME has no SFC tool. But ...

If the OS is damaged so badly the SFP (System File Protection) didn't put CONTROL.EXE back, you must reinstall the OS.

Before we do that, read this link -> http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ToolsQuit.htm

Some virus/spyware/trojans knock out the tools to hinder the user from fixing the machine. Links about online scanners are at the link noted.
