you probably have several programs configured to monitor your drive and be able to write to it. the usual ones are MS Media Player and Real Player. there may be others. you may have to update all the software that can play back or record CDs.
Herb...
After installing RealNetworks a few days ago, and then uninstalling because it was quite flaky, nothing on my computer will recognize my CD drive. I tried re-installing driver from Windows but I got conflicting error messages - one saying it could not locate driver, the second saying driver couldn't be installed because device was not present. This is a Dell 8200 running XP Home. I can't seem to find the manufacturer of the drive, but the driver is, I think, HC-DT-ST-CD-RW-GCE-8160B. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
