Loss of color, sound, will not restore, will not scan

Apr 10, 2005 4:05AM PDT

My 4 yr old Gateway 1100 runs slow inspite of upgrading to 256MB. Have reset locations, cleared artwork, emptied recycle bins, defraged, disabled conflicting software, deleted files, history, etc. In addition, I now I have lost color and sound. It will not accept my attempts to return to 600x800 pixel and 256 color standards. It also will not restore and will not allow me to run disc scan. I have ~40 files that are virus infection and "write protected". I have not tried to remove any of these to date. Does anyone have recommendations for solutions to start resolving any of these problems?

Have you thought about doing a reinstall?

If it is four years old, you are probably using Windows ME or 98. As long as you have all of the disks required and your product key number for Windows, it might be easier to start fresh than to do more problem solving.

have you thought about a reinstall...

glb613--Thanks for your reply. I had no knowledge of this procedure. Accordingly, I had not considered this. With all the problems I now have it sounds encouraging. Could you please give me more details or references about the reinstall procedure you mention??

Just asking.

I don't see any writing in your post about installing drivers for the machine. Why is that?

Bob--Thanks for your reply and assistance. Installing drivers is certainly something I should consider. I see now that my manual does indeed mention this as a solution. I will give it a try.
