Looks like my natural gas supplier is predicting cold weather

Dec 4, 2003 3:11AM PST

Nashville Gas predicts you may be paying them 10-20% more to heat your home in the coming months. So what's fueling the rate increase, and what does it mean for your pocketbook?

Nashville Gas says that you - the average customer - will pay $635 for your natural gas this winter. But now, with possible price hikes of up to $20, that bill could go as high as $762. That's not good news for Nashvillians.

So why projected higher gas prices? Nashville Gas says that the weather is to blame. {U]If we see lots of cold weather, and so do other regions of the country this winter, natural gas prices will go higher.

So, does that mean if we and other regions of the country don'thave lots of cold weather, will the prices stay the same? Happy

Don't know why they are blaming the weather ...

... from everything I've heard, cold or warm winter, natural gas supplies are tight and likely to become tighter in the future.

I paid less for my oil than expected on the last fill. Almost makes me wish I had an 800 gallon tank or something Happy cuz I would have filled up this summer if I could have! Turned out we ran out and had to fill end of last winter and then it warmed up.

Hi, Evie,

I used to use oil (two 250- gal. tanks) , and the colder it got, the higher the price. I recall that not too many years ago you folks in the northeast got hit hard with high prices.

What I still don't understand, though a bunch of the Texans here have tried to explain it to me, is why there should be a natural gas shortage unless winters were unexpectedly extremely cold. Seems like they cold build some more storage tanks.

Hi Angeline,

Yep, we got hit pretty hard two years ago if I recall, last year was more manageable but personally we were hit hard by equipment costs and maintenance snafu's that resulting in burning through a full tank about 4X as fast as we usually do! It's not looking too bad at this point, but all the warnings are for price increases.

I found this link re: the shortage of natural gas: http://www.enviroliteracy.org/subcategory.php/234.html
I'm not sure just exactly the cost of storing more would be, but it seems it would probably be an economic factor.

Ah, its so good to see right wing economics in action:

charge whatever the market will bear, or

screw 'em when they're down.

Of course, for demonstrating such entrepreneurship, they should be given a tax cut. Profiteering must be rewarded. Happy
