Looking to start a web design business?

Nov 10, 2008 11:29AM PST

Hi all,
I want to start my own web design business. There are some questions that are luring in my mind. I do have one or two clients to get started but how can I get more and spread my work to masses? How do I start designing for people? Do I need a site that displays my work, etc?

A site that displays work

is a bonus. It allows them to see some samples, but the best way to advertise is by word of mouth. That's how I get most of my business, if not all. Other than that, stop by at some of your local stores, talk to the people, spread the word, etc. Bars, restaurants, small shops, etc, might be interested.

As internet business is growing day by day, web designing is buzzing high. As far as getting started and getting more clients is concerned, the best way I have learned is through word of mouth, and also through online. First of all you should settle on a name for your business and design/build a simple portfolio site to showcase your work. More you expose your good work more there are chances to get clients. Starting a web design business comprises a lot of things, so before getting started make sure you are all equipped to get into it.

My 2 Cents

1) How can I get more and spread my work to masses
- By marketing (What kind of marketing? online or offline? If online - by advertisement? by SEO? by blog? by forum advertisement? etc yet to decide)

2) How do I start designing for people?
- What you mean by this? You are the expert in this. You should be able to design and package the whole design in a ready-to-sell-and-use package right?

3) Do I need a site that displays my work?
- Yes I think you do need one. Imagine myself if I'm your client, I will be more persuaded if I see your previous work before hand. Furthermore if you have a website, that will be your sort of online store or studio. You can market your service by marketing your website.

Just my 2 cents.
