A couple of suggestions. . .

If portability is a real issue, you'll probably want to look for something in the 4-7 lb. range. For the uses you're describing, there's probably not a real need for you to grab a sterotypical "desktop replacement" laptop. A lot of the time, "desktop replacement" translates into "very very heavy," so be on the lookout for that.

2GB of RAM is a pretty standard amount these days, but if you're going to be doing something involving multiple applications or programs open at once, you might want to consider getting a little more.

Also, have you given any thoughts to screen size? Some folks are comfortable with a 13-14 inch screen, but it is definitely too small for some users.

Do you have any particular models in mind yet, or are you just starting the hunt? I'll be glad to answer specifics you might have about them.

Thanks,
