Looking to learn video editing

Hello everyone,

I'm wanting to learn how to shoot and edit video, and I was hoping to get some opinions on whether my PC hardware right now is sufficient to handle that, as well as some recommendations on video editing software. I am a complete novice, so I'm not looking for top of the line professional products, but something that would suffice for my amateur needs. Any help would be appreciated.

My system specs are:
Dell Studio XPS 7100
OS: Windows 7
Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 945 Processor (4 CPUs) 3.0GHz
Memory: 8MB RAM
