Looking for GPS for both U.S. and Greece

Feb 3, 2009 11:28PM PST

I'm interested in a GPS that I can use here in the U.S. but also when travelling to Greece later in 2009.

I understand that information about other countries can be downloaded to certain GPS devices via SD cards.

What GPS manufacturers have this capability?

Do only certain models have the capability of loading maps for other countries?

Where do I find out what countries are available to download to my GPS?

Thanks.

TomTom and Garmin both sell the maps for Greece
Feb 5, 2009 9:26AM PST

I am checking into this myself, for a neighbor who is here from Cyprus. Garmin sells the maps for Italy and Greece in a packaged SD card for $99, and TomTom sells individual map set for Greece for $79.

I was checking into maps of Cyprus, and neither sell maps of Cyprus, but Garmin listed an independent agency in Limassol (third-party map developer) that sells the Cyprus maps for Garmin products.

I will buy her the Garmin Nuvi 770 or 880 if I can afford it, so that she will be able to travel in the US, and then use it in Cyprus and Greece as well.

Thanks for the reply re: GPS for Greece

Does it look like the Garmin nuvi 770 or 880 are required to have the download capability? Can any of the lower-priced models access SD cards? Where did you find this info out?

I did not see that TomTom listed Greece as one of the countries that they have maps for. Where did you see this?

The one thing I found out that concerns me is that for Garvin, they list their Greece maps as just containing detail for the major cities, of which there aren't a lot that I will be visiting. I feel pretty confident making my way around Athens. I'm looking for help when I'm out driving on the mainland. I'll be going to Nafpaktos, then to Delphi, up to Kalambaka, over to Volos and back to Athens.

If the GPS maps don't have detail for the mainland, then I may as well just rely on regular maps.
