Looking for better zoom and quicker shot lag

My Nikon Coolpix has sustained one drop test too many. It has been a good compact snapshot camera. But our trip to San Diego this week accented its weakness in zoom and shot lag. I am definitely looking to move-up to a 10X optical zoom and those cameras typically have less shot lag.

I am looking to make the jump from the small point and shoot to a larger, faster advanced camera in the $400 and under range. Any suggestions or relavvent experience?

Canon S2IS or S3IS ( newer model ) . These 2 cameras are some great candidates !
