You may want to try ebay

It sounds like you want one of the older iPods that had the wheel. My old HP iPod 20GB is still working fine.

Answer
You could grab a Sansa

It will set you back less $$ than an iPod, and accommodate nearly all types of audio files. A simple 'Y' connector will let you connect 99% of MP3 players to a home/car stereo unless your BF needs to utilize the proprietary dock connector via an iOS device. For example, some head units (=car stereos) let you control the iPod directly after connecting digitally via the dock connector. The very basic Alpine deck in my Honda Accord does this, FWIW. Sound quality is slightly better than using the 'Y' connector. OTOH, some newer decks let you go in via USB from the front though, which is also handy. Plug and play like a PC, etc.
