Question

Looking for a tablet (Need Suggestions)

Sep 18, 2012 9:34AM PDT

I've been looking to purchase a tablet for a while now and I could use some suggestions.

Now here's what I'm looking for:
-10 inch Screen
-USB 2.0 or 3.0 port
-Full HDMI port
-Flash support
-Android OS (Jelly Bean) if possible
-Decent battery life
-Fully Memory Card Slot
-Dual core processor
-At Least 1GB of ram
-Full HD Screen (1920X1080p)
-16GB Hard Drive Space (I have a 500GB portable HDD, so storage won't be an issue).

My main use for this tablet would be personal just something I can pick up when I don't feel like turning on my laptop. I'll mainly have it connected to my 40 inch Samsung. I've been looking at the Toshiba Thrive, but I don't know if it will get the 4.1 OS update? So I don't know if I should buy one now or just wait a while until newer ones are released? Thank you for your opinions in advance.

Since adobe is pulling back on that you find tablets a revision behind and folk are gripping about that plus issues like Hulu.com and other sites do not play. Is this OK with you? That is, you are not expecting a PC level experience are you?

http://www.techradar.com/us/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/jelly-bean-rolling-out-now-on-nexus-s-4g-and-galaxy-nexus-galaxy-s3-in-oct--1096435 and other sites seem to point that what you are looking for (disregarding my questions that is) may be a month away.

About updates. If there is a harsh lesson to learn, NEVER get a tablet with a promise that the OS will be upgraded. Of course you have folk that live on promises.

Answer
Don't get the thrive

I owned the Toshiba Thrive. I purchased the 8gb model, I downloaded some apps and decided to then delete some. I noticed that I had nearly used all of my storage (which was odd because I only had the tablet a few weeks). Upon further investigation I noticed that I only had 3gb of space. I contacted Toshiba wondering why this was. They told me that is how Toshiba allocated the memory. All Thrives have 3 gb of "app" space. You cannot set the SD card slot as primary so you cannot put apps on the card and play them (per Toshiba). I asked them what was the point in doing this. They informed me that it was to allow space for pictures, videos, and documents to be saved. Which I found odd because you CAN save those to your 32gb SD card and just use that. Bottom line 3gb of app space is NOT alot.

Myself personally I am an ASUS guy. I have owned the TF101, and the TF300 (til my wife dropped it the other day Sad ). The only issue I see is all of the asus tablets (other than the Slider and TF101) have quadcore processors. I think the only real tablet that will meet your resolution needs will be the ASUS TF700. However there has been a rumored TF500 which falls between the TF300 and TF700. As far as the full size card slot there are a few Acers that have that but they don't usually get good reviews. If you get the Asus tablet, get the dock and you will get the full sized usb, and sd card. As for the HDMI port..i'd get an adapter off ebay for less than $5 (thats what I did to hook my TF300 up).

Be careful just because a tablet has an hdmi port doesn't mean it has the ability to mirror onto your tv.

I have been researching tablets for close to a year. I have owned the Zenithink ZT80 (not very good), the ASUS TF101 (great..just getting old now). I have also owned the Thrive (didn't like it) and the TF300...loved it..miss the gorilla glass lol. Anyways if you want to talk to me you can email me firstcorinthians1013@Yahoo.com

I love to talk to people about tablets and bounce ideas off of them. Honestly I am debating between the TF700 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Feel free to email me and I'd be glad to talk to you more about tablet selections, I research it daily.
