Looking for a Point-and-Shoot camera with Auto File Transfer

Jan 20, 2010 10:06PM PST

I'm looking for a Point-and-Shoot camera with an "automatic file transfer" ability. When I click on the shutter button of the camera, I want the picture file to be automatically transferred to the computer's hard drive. (No intermediate step, just press shutter button and file transfers.)

I prefer the transfer done via a wired USB connection, but wireless is also acceptable. I'll also need the ability to customize the folder location on the computer the picture would be sent to.

If you're familiar with the Canon EOS Utility software for DSLR cameras, it does the same thing. But I'm trying to find a Point-and-Shoot equivalent. Thanks.

Budget: Under $300
Special features request: Long battery life.
Size: Pocket-sized
Megapixels: Around 7, could be lower or higher.
Optical Zoom: Standard
General Use of Camera: Taking close-up pictures.
Shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos: Possibly.
Any particular brands/models you like or hate: No.

There are a few wireless cameras around and even a wireless SD memory card.
But I don't think they will be what you are looking for.

You might look at special software as a solution.
It works with many DSLR cameras and about a dozen Canon PowerShot cameras.

For PowerShot cameras look at the program called PSRemote.

Regarding camera qualifications - You will not find any digital camera under $300 that does well in low light unless you use flash or floodlights.

Thanks for the Samsung ST1000 suggestion

Thanks for the suggestion on the ST1000. By any chance do you know if it also supports tethered shooting via an USB cable?

Samsung Intelli-Studio s/w

I am not sure if tethered shooting is supported via a USB cable as you take each shot.

However, since ST1000 has a Wi-Fi feature, pictures taken can be uploaded to your PC if the PC has also Wi-Fi feature.

Samsung provides its own s/w called "Intelli-Studio" which will allow you to automatically upload pictures from ST1000 to the PC once you connect it via a USB cable.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

I have the exact same problem and the best I have managed to find is a MicroSD to USB Adapter that basically acts as a pass through. I've prefer something wireless if possible!

Non-starter

Manufacturers have dabbled with Wi-Fi enabled cameras with varying degrees of non-success. Samsung has one now, the SH100:

Sony has incorporated something called TransferJet into their cameras, where you can tough the camera to another TransferJet enabled device to share files.
