Question

Looking for a new laptop, need help

Apr 29, 2017 2:17PM PDT

Hi.

I am planning to buy a new laptop, but I have specific requirements:
- screen must be 17''
- I must be able to install Windows 7 64 bit on it and have all the drivers work properly
- 8 or more ram
- price: 500 GBP/600 EUR
- brand is irrelevant as long as I can have all requirements given.

Please, don't send me to Google. It's filled up with gazillions of computers but I need an opinion of real people here.

The first laptopshop I looked at, had 2 laptops (both HP) that met your first three requirements (Windows 7 already installed), but they were 1100 euro. Most Windows 7 laptops now are business class laptops, and those are more expensive than the price you need.

That indeed leaves downgrading as a cheaper option. But whatever is published in specifications, it never is the downgradability to Windows 7. So I think you'll need personal advice from a shop or the sales department of the maker.

Two questions since you didn't tell WHY you need Windows 7?
- Would a Windows 10 laptop with Windows 7 running in a virtual machine be acceptable?
- How about Windows 10 disguised as Windows 7 by installing Classic Shell. That's what I run here. Looks quite good and I have the weather app and better safety as a bonus.

Microsoft does not issue patched for current generation CPUs. This is in the news so be sure your new laptop has W7 support and not a current gen CPU.

My opinion is to move on to W10 to save bucks and hair.
