Looking for a laptop with virtually ZERO fan noise

by sleepyman62 / December 29, 2008 2:49 AM PST

any suggestions? assuming i am only running maybe msword and firefox simultaneously most of the time, but at the same time i would like my laptop to run matlab, cad, proE, other similar softwares, and of course diablo 3 and starcraft 2 when they come out.

IF such a laptop does not exist can someone recommend me a cheap one (1500 or less) that can do all of this. lately i have been looking at sager which are relatively cheap, but fairly bulky (2" plus). also i would prefer if this laptop had the option for the centrino 2 (montevina) processor, dedicated graphics, and ddr3 upgradeability.

i realize that this shows how picky i am being about this, but i was incredibly dissappointed with my last laptop purchase (whose fans never shut off) and want this one to go much better. thanks for your help ^_^!!

The quietest so far
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / December 29, 2008 4:09 AM PST

Is my Acer Aspire One. It's not dead silent but is the quietest I've owned over the years. It runs XP, Visual Studio 2008 and I hooked it up to a 22 inch widescreen without a hitch.

It weighs 2.1 pounds and I bought the pricier 160GB model for under 395 bucks.

Before you discount this, it runs circles around machines that you could buy in 2000. I also tried our wirelsss Logitech keyboard and mouse which addresses any concern about the keyboard and mouse.

I've never found a cheap computer that ran circles around the more expencive ones. There is always a corner that gets cut to make the price better. If you don't don't hit the wall with what they cut cheap makes sence.

For the OP:
For word and firefox about anything you can buy is going to work. Fan noise is a tough one. Thinkpads claim to have less fan noise due to a re-design. But they all have noise when you push them like Diablo 3 will do. Then it's a matter of fan design and in that regard I really haven't seen ratings.

Diablo 3 and other games will tend to want a discrete graphics card. That pushes you in the 1000+ range. Not the netbook price range.
