General discussion

Looking for a good super zoom camera.

Nov 22, 2010 6:10AM PST

I'm looking for a super zoom camera with the following characteristics, in order of importance. I know you can't have everything but any suggestion on something that's close?

Good optics (for a super zoom camera).

Good sensor.

Good for low-light situations.

Swivel screen.

Viewfinder (to press the camera against my forehead) that shows nearly 100% of picture. Can be digital.

HD video if possible, with video button.

Manual zoom ring.

The Ideal camera

I don't know of any digital camera that has all of the features you want.

"Good for low-light situations" eliminates all non-DSLR cameras.
(unless you plan of using a tripod and a slow shutter speed).

Here is a comparison/review of super zoom cameras:

Something to consider:
Anytime you zoom further than 10X on any camera you will need a tripod to reduce camera movement. If you hand-hold the camera at high zoom settings you will get blurred photos, because of camera shake.

Great article. Seems Panasonic's DMC-FZ38 is the way to go for me.
