Looking for a good speaker set...

Sep 5, 2008 5:31AM PDT

Hey all, I'm trying to figure out which speakers would be a good match with the reciever I'm intending to get. Currently, I'm looking between TWO specific recievers: Onkyo TX-SR606 and the Sony STR-DG820 (maybe even the 920).

My room size is small-and will be so for the next 4/5 years. I'm living in the Bay Area in an apartment, so I want some good sound coming out of a smaller space-without waking the neighbors. I found the Onkyo SKS-HT240 for speakers...but I want options; not to mention the review for them is fairly old.

I don't want virtual surround sound and everything I've read so far seems to indicate that the bigger, more expensive sets (like all of highest rated sets on CNet) would be simply overbearing in the smaller space I have. The room itself is about 200-300 square feet (currently, it's the living room with a side area for an office, and is continuous with the dining room. It's separated from the kitchen but can still look into it via a counter). When I move, I can't imagine being it being a bigger room that I move this set into.

Currently, I have: a PS3 (with HDMI for video/audio), a Wii (hooked up via Component and optical digital), an Apple TV (HDMI for video/audio). At the moment, I can't remember what HDTV I've got but it's a good and reliable.

Advice?

If $400 or $500 is your budget, look at that JR Weekend sale

price quickly. The JBL or H-K are both good candidates.
