Looking for a good Firewall/Virus Scanner Combo XP pro

Aug 15, 2004 10:40AM PDT

I'm looking for a good Firewall/Virus scanner combination for my Dad's windows XP Pro machine. He currently has McAffe (or however you spell that thing) and it's locked up the updates because it's "month 11 out of 12."

It needs a program that would be good for an intermediate to advanced beginner. I'm doing most of the set up, but I can't be totally sure what all he's doing on the computer. So I usally miss something.

The computer is mainly used for his mechanic buisness. So, it can't be down for more than a couple of hours, and that's only on nights and weekends. So the switch needs to be as pain free as possable.

There are two products that work very well. AVG antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Both are free for the download. Go to Google and do a search. You should be able to find them without any problems.

Zone Alarm is free for non profits and personal use, but dad's computer is used for profit. So that's a no go.

Thanks for the recommendation of AVG though, I didn't know it would be ok to have it for office use.

I personally like Sygate firewall, as it is easy to setup and use. I use Nortons 2003 which doesn't have the problems that 2004 Nortons has.
