login box pops up while offline

Dec 9, 2003 5:50AM PST

When working offline, the login box tends to pop up. It will go away after clicking it off, but it will come back. Anything I can do to fix this nuisance?

Operating system is WinMe.

Thanks

Brian,

There are quite a few possibilities here.

First, if you're using Outlook Express, open it, click on "Tools", choose "Options", then UNCHECK the box that says: "Check for new messages every..." and UNCHECK the box that says: "Send and receive messages at start up". If you make any changes, click on "Apply", then OK.

There is also a known "bug" with an earlier version of ZoneAlarm, (I believe it's version 3.1.291) where the program will attempt to update itself when loaded at start up. Disable it at start up and only run it when connected to the net and the log-on window won't load.

Next, make sure that the machine is free from viruses and parasites by running the free online scan below, then download, install and run the free "Spyware" removal utilities listed below.

Trend Micro's Housecall Online Scanner

Panda Antivirus Online Scanner

Here are the free spyware removal tools. After installing them, make sure to update them from within their user interfaces. Delete all spyware they find.

Ad-Aware 6 Spyware Removal Tool

?Spybot Search & Destroy? Spyware Removal Tool

Hope this helps and let us know what you find.

Grif

So far, Ive run HouseCall, and Spybot S&D. Also, Ive gone into outlook, though we never use it, and unchecked where it said "Check new messages every...". For good measure, I also unchecked "send and receive messages at startup, though I may recheck it if the dialog box doesnt automatically pop up when Im going to go online. Ive been unable to find ZoneAlarm, so maybe she doesnt have that one. Ill see what happens, but I bet the Outlook was the culprit. Thanks Grif! Ill see if there are anymore developments, but I think it is fixed.
