Log-In Problems : PLEASE HELP!

I recently changed from dial-up to DSL and since am having problems logging in on certain sites, am unable to access My Yahoo! eMail program and can not 'check out' on certain sites. I have Dell Inspiron 3000 M200ST,MSWXP Pro Ver2002, Internet Explorer 6.0 (although System Info shows Mozilla/ 4.0 compatible with MSIE 6.0,Windows NT 5.1,Spam Blocker Utility 4.6.1). I run Norton Antivirus 2005 and SpyBot- Search and Destroy. When I enter my user name and password I get a page stating: Web page can not be displayed. DNS Error/Unable to find Server. I have tried all the listed remedies,ie. Refresh,use correct address, check security connections,check connection settings, etc. Have checked with DSL provider and seem to have correct settings. I have also started getting 'RunTime Errors' pop-up. What are these? I am prompted to 'DeBug' but if I check yes the same RunTime Error box pops up. This just happened when I tried to download LogMeIn Free 2.20.475 just now. Error:no such interface supported. Any help out there?

PART I:

1. Domain Name System (DNS), a locator service in Windows, is an industry-standard protocol that locates computers on an IP-based network. IP networks, such as the Internet and Windows networks, rely on number-based addresses to process data. Users however, can more easily remember name addresses, so it is necessary to translate user-friendly names (www.microsoft.com) into addresses that the network can recognize (207.46.131.137). Before DNS, a Hosts file was used -- a manually created file residing on a host computer that associates host names with IP addresses -- still used today in fact.

Note: For instance, Host name addresses such as www.yahoo.com are addresses you see and may use every day and are what we recognize as intellectual information. IP addresses are numbers such as 204.71.200.67 that mean the same thing and which the computers uses to actually find the sites. Even though a user may use either the ''Host'' or ''IP address'' as a site address using Internet Explorer, the computer must first look up and translate the ''Host name'' to an ''IP address'' before a connection is made.

2. DNS Servers map IP addresses to computer names and computer names to IP addresses. By doing so, they provide the mechanism to locate network resources. The DNS WMI Provider allows applications to interact with DNS Servers through the unified management framework of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). A DNS Server is a computer that completes the process of name resolution in DNS and contains zone files that enable them to resolve names to IP addresses and IP addresses to names. When queried, a DNS Server will respond in one of three ways:

? The server returns the requested name-resolution or IP-resolution data.

? The server returns a pointer to another DNS Server that can service the request.

? The server indicates that it does not have the requested data.

3. A DNS zone is a set of files or records (more precisely, a database of resource record entries) that corresponds to part of the DNS hierarchical name space. DNS zones are used to delineate which DNS Servers are responsible (authoritative) for resolving name-resolution queries for a given section of the DNS hierarchy. DNS zones differ from the domain structure in the following fashion: zones can be composed of one or more DNS domains. One zone in the gadgets.widgets.microsoft.com domain tree might be authoritative for the gadgets and widgets domains.

4. DNS WMI Provider Overview

a. A provider is an architectural element of Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). WMI defines a unified architecture for describing, accessing, and instrumenting objects. Part of this architecture is a large database of WMI classes used to carry out remote management tasks on specific objects.

b. WMI providers act as intermediaries between WMI and one or more managed objects. When WMI receives a request from a management application for data that is not available from the CIM repository or for notifications of events that WMI does not support, it forwards the request to a provider. Providers supply data and event notifications for managed objects that are specific to their particular domain. A provider extends the WMI schema of classes to allow WMI to work with new types of objects. The DNS WMI Provider defines classes for querying and configuring a DNS Server, along with its associated DNS zones and DNS records.

c. The DNS WMI provider exposes a number of DNS objects to clients, including DNS Server, DNS domain, and DNS RR objects. Through those objects, clients are able to perform DNS management activities.

5. Supplemental: ''HOW TO: Configure Windows XP TCP/IP to Use DNS (Q305553).''

6. The article [Q175722] describes the following errors you may receive when starting Internet Explorer, suggests troubleshooting procedures, and discusses the reasons for the anomaly below:

? The page cannot be displayed

? The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

? Cannot find server or DNS Error

a. Multiple copies of the Wsock32.dll file are installed on your computer.

b. An incorrect version of the Wsock32.dll file is installed on your computer.

c. If you try to view a file (file://) you do not have permissions to view.

d. Intermittent connection problems, low system resources, and dropped connections while attempting to load the Web page.

e. You are using America Online as your Internet service provider, and there is not a Dial-Up Adapter installed, but there is an AOL Adapter.

f. Unable to resolve the DNS name, or the DNS server returned an error.

g. Corrupted cookies can also cause this issue with Internet Explorer 5.

h. The Internet Explorer connection settings for the dial-up connection are configured to use a proxy server.

7. Suggestions:

a. Download and follow the instructions for ''IEFix'' - a general purpose fix for Internet Explorer (Win 98/ME/2000/XP):

Note: Else, some of the core Internet Explorer ''?.dll files'' may not be correctly registered or need registering. First, verify the exact path of where the Iexplore.exe file is found and used as noted for the ''Primary. . .'' example. Second, click Start, Run, type exactly ''Primary Hard Drive Letter:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe'' /rereg, and then either click OK or press Enter.

? Registers Urlmon.dll, Mshtml.dll, Actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Shell32.dll, Shdocvw.dll, [Q281679].

? Refreshes Internet Explorer using IE.INF method. Note:

''Unable to Install Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP (Q304872)''

''How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q31837Cool''

? Initiates ''SFC /Scannow'' (Win2K&XP), [Q310747].

Caveat: Using IEFix myself, the utility does not suggest or require a reboot, but I do suggest that you do. In addition, if an extra icon for IE is located on the Desktop afterwards, you may delete it.

b. ''WinSock XP Fix'' (Image) offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstall of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. If you encounter connection problems after removing network related software, Adware or after registry clean-up; and all other ways fail, then ''download'' and give WinSock XP Fix a try, a 1,412kb file. It can create a registry backup of your current settings, so it is fairly safe to use.

c. ''LSP-Fix'' is a free utility that may be downloaded to repair certain problems associated with Internet software when you can no longer access Web sites due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of software. LSP-Fix repairs the Winsock LSP chain by removing the entries left behind when LSP software is removed by hand (or when errors in the software itself break the LSP chain), and removing any gaps in the chain.

PART II:

I have also started getting 'RunTime Errors' pop-up. What are these? I am prompted to 'DeBug' but if I check yes the same RunTime Error box pops up.

Without the full and accurate information concerning the error received/displayed, we cannot pinpoint a cause accurately.

Since this type error can cover a broad area, please help yourself to one of several articles listed on the Microsoft Knowledge Base, subject ''A run-time error has occurred. Do you wish to debug?.''

But I must say I am more confused than ever. I apologize for taking so long to reply to your post. Part of my problems are that I can not click on links and get to specified sites, so I was unable to try IEFix or check out any of the KB articles you listed. I did go to the mvps.com site that showed on my Status bar when I clicked the IEFix but was unable to find anything there. I appreciate the time and detail you took in your response to my post. Thank you for answering. I neglected to state that the Dell Inspiron 3000 I have is used, bought as a 'rebuild' from a company that supposedly uses the computers they purchase as teaching tools for their students. To use to teach myself on, it has been ok but my patience is wearing thin. Numerous problems and glitches. I have been told by Dell that I have invalid service tag and Windows says invalid product key. Have been unable to contact company I purchased from for assistance. I had been able to download Windows updates earlier on but can not do that now. I am sure that a great deal of my trouble is 'user'caused. I also realize the system is obsolete but am unable to upgrade due to financial effect. There were numerous files already present at purchase,disc space is extremely low. I did not recieve any OS cd just unit, power supply cord and old mouse that doesn't fit port. No manual or info. From what I have read up on while searching for help,my XP Pro version (installed when I bought it) has been altered and is not complete. Internet Explorer is what I use but my system info file shows Mozilla/4.0 as my browzer. I get so confused and frustrated I could scream! Not having used computers before I was unaware of what to expect but I know it has to be better than this!! I can not access links in Outlook Express, on most web sites, can not log in on various sites so I don't log out if I get in, have trouble with Active X and Java applications, trouble trying to use Windows Media player, viewing videos. The list goes on and on. I don't have anyone to go to to help personally with these issues so I have been trying forums. I have been unable to get Instant Message set up through either MSN,Windows or Yahoo! If I do achieve some progress I'm like a kid at Christmas! As much as I have enjoyed what little I can accomplish, I am about ready to give up on the cyber-world. Forgive my rambling on about this. Don't know where to turn.

Since you're having problems with links and such, you may need to use a friend or family member's computer to download and install the most recent Java and Script Engine from the link below..If you can download them on your computer, great..If not, then download the files on another computer, then burn the files to a CD and transfer them to your machine using the CD-Rom. Follow the instructions below:

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then click on the ''Download JRE 5.0 Update 6'' download link that is in the ''JRE 5.0 Update 6 includes the JVM technology'' section. Download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean), then install Java 1.5 from the installer.

AFter that, download and install the updated Script engine from the appropriate link below:

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP

At the link above, you'll need to validate your version of XP which isn't a problem as long as its legal.

After everything is installed, then open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Internet Options'' icon, then click on the ''Advanced'' tab. When that loads, scroll down to the ''Java(Sun)'' section and make sure there is a CHECK mark next to: ''Use Java,....''. Click on Apply. Then scroll to the ''Multimedia'' section and place a CHECK mark in the ''Play Sounds In Web Pages'', ''Play videos in Web Pages'', & ''Show pictures'' box and UNCHECK the box next to ''Show download Placeholders:'', then click on Apply, then Ok.

See if this fixes the issue...Your comments about improper Windows product key and not being able to contact the company that prepared your computer are a problem..I'm not sure, but IF the computer was created with a bootleg Windows XP operating system, you won't be able to install updates and such..It happens occasionally and if that has occurred, then you may need to contact Microsoft to get a legal version of XP's product key. One thing at a time though. See if you can download and install the script engine and java from the instructions above.

Sorry about delay in reporting back. Wanted to let you know update on both of your suggestions. I was unable to make any headway with either of your suggestions, as I coul not connect thru links I was unable to access some of info, on some things (such as downloading Java update,etc) I was unable to complete downloads for whatever reason, on and on... Finally I spoke with my ISP support tech (again!) and lucked on to one great fellow who went beyond his role of merely confirming that my DSL was connecting. I beleive it mystified him and prompted him to get to bottom of problem. So... long story short, he had me download and install Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Voila! I can now access sites I couldn't before, log-in to ones I couldn't and connect thru links. All the world of difference. So, I have been familarizing myself with Firefox lately. So far, great! In trying to follow some of your suggestions I discovered numerous .dll files corrupted and/or missing,wintrust.dll missing,etc... there are only 3 Iexplore.exe found.
I have been advised to do a clean sweep and reinstall Windows XP Pro but don't know if I have enough confidence to attempt that on my own. Nor do I have copy of cd,as it was installed when I purchased comp. In fact it's listed in bio's as 'customized' version. Have been told I should have received cd along with comp in order for it to be legal install, even if it was done under networking usage? I finally tracked down email name/address of three contacts at company/school I bought from and sent off email enquireing about cd, invalid product key and invaled service tag last p.m. and am waiting for reply. I am unable to financially afford cost of WXP cd so hope can clear this up. Any further thoughts or input? Where do I go from here?

Grif: Sorry this is so late in replying to your post on 2/04- I did d/l and run IEFix Utility but can't tell if it helped or not. There are numerous .dll files missing from registry and now when I reboot I get a window popup that states "IEv6 has been removed. Do you want to clean up personal settings? y/n" IE is still showing in programs in Control Panel and I can still use it although since I d/l Firefox that is the one I'm using now. I love it! I did d/l Java and no problems there. I checked out www.microsoft.com/piracy/howtotell last night. I do NOT have COA sticker on my pc, can NOT find Product Key, did NOT get CD of WXP with purchase of my pc and can NOT get any response from place I purchased the notebook from,either phone calls or emails. MSW does not allow d/l of updates or acknowledge any attempt at diagnostic scans. Soooo.... I filed a report last night and will wait to see. Anyhow most or all of the problems I was having before Firefox have pretty much been taken care of with the use of that brouser.
Now, should I go ahead and check yes on the window about clearing up personal settings? I have hesitated to mess with it any more since things seem to be going good at this point.
One other question if you don't mind- due to unforseen difficulties my ISP may very well be terminated by this time tomorrow. My question is how can I transfer my email account from my ISP account to one I have with Yahoo mail. Do I need to contact all my addresses with the different email address or can I do a onetime change over? I've checked out Yahoo's email sync setup and it seemed complicated to import/export then synch, ect. Any idea or suggestions? I could then still be able to stay in touch with my contacts thru my daughters pc using my Yahoo mail account and not have to use Outlook Express on my pc. Hopefully I will be able to straighten up problems and quickly get back online but you never know. Thanks for any help you might have. AJ Happy

It won't happen automatically. Likewise, you'll probably want to manually transfer your contacts from Outlook Express to the address book in Yahoo. UNLESS you happen to have the "paid" version of Yahoo Mail. The free version won't allow you to use POP3 mail such as Outlook Express. The "paid" version does allow you to use Outlook Express much like you did with your ISP. It's up to you but if you go with the paid version, you'll simply need to change the settings from your old ISP account to the new POP3 settings of Yahoo.
