Problem corrected for now
Mar 29, 2008 1:41AM PDT

Mark

After numerous tries went on to other browsing and ended the day

This morning opened cnet at Spyware and virus's and all forums were logged in and working.

This same problem occurred a few days ago exactly the same way

Between the two occurances I ran the following scans

Avg 7.5 anti-virus...clean
super anti spyware...clean
avg anti spyware...clean
ccleaner...clean
spyware terminator...clean
avg rootkit...clean
sopho rootkit...clean
micro trend housecall ...clean
eset online scan...clean
bit defender online scan...clean
Rogue remover...clean
Comodo boclean ....clean
Firewall is comodo and cnet allowed
Firefox set to always allow cnet cookies

I feel my system is clean

Is this possibly another of cnets red herrings

Thanks for the reply

I suspect it is

It doesn't look like a problem at your end. I'm not sure its a login problem as you were able to access all the other forums you tried, so it looks like one of the CNET blips we have from time to time.

Hey Ray, quick question
Apr 1, 2008 2:56AM PDT

After you log in (does the login look area still looks like you are not logged, and you still see the "black triangles"?

What happens if you refresh your browser?

Do you still remained logged out? Or are you logged in after the browser refresh?

Let me know.

Login problems
Apr 1, 2008 4:33AM PDT

Lee

This is what I call a floating problem Its here yesterday gone today

I normally open cnet at the Virus and security forum but opening at some other forum then going to Virus&Security does not make any difference

The very top line ask for login, sign up etc

Click login and enter user name and password click enter window refreshes and goes back to login, sign up

All virus and security post have a black triangle next to them instead of the read, unread markings

Navigate to other forums such as Windows XP,Linux,Computer help, etc all are normal and usable

Reload page, refresh browser has no effect on problem

Shut down Windows and opened Linux Ubuntu and all forums normal

Back to Windows and cnet problem still exist
Shutdown computer for the night

Upon return to Windows and cnet the next day all forums normal???

Switched to Ubuntu and the Virus&Security and Windows XP were both showing I needed to login on all other forums I normally visit were normal

Tried logging on at Ubuntu and had same results as with Windows

As of this morning both os's are getting a normal cnet

Hope this help but how does a person find a floating problem

FYI: This happened to me in Cnet Courses...
Apr 1, 2008 8:20AM PDT

Since the login is, to a degree, universal, it may be connected. For the past week or so I've encountered a similar problem while going through the Cnet Courses, where one course would recognize me while another would repeatedly insist that I log in, report success, then repeat. I deleted the cookies that store Cnet login credentials and logged in again without issue, but then a few hours to a day later it would strike again.

Not you.
Apr 18, 2008 7:42PM PDT

I'm sure it is not you Phil. Rather it's likely a problem with CNET again.

But to be sure, why not use a utility like CCleaner to clean out all the cookies, history, temporary internet files, mru lists, (most recently used), etc, the reboot the computer and try again.

CCleaner can be downloaded from http://www.ccleaner.com if you don't already have it. If you decide to try it beware the install process as it may try to install a Yahoo browser addon. Just say no.

When you run it you can tell it what lists, temp files to check. Also you can specify which cookies to keep in the Options > Cookies section. That is useful because cookies can hold important login information, (but not passwords), and you may not want to lose some of them.

See if that helps.

Ccleaner
Apr 19, 2008 12:10AM PDT

I use ccleaner on a daily basis to clean cookies etc and to clean registry.

I also use mru blaster to clean mru's

I have forums.cnet.com to allow as an exception in firefox cookies. So that I don't have to log in every time I visit cnet

I have been using this same procedure since I joined cnet only now am I experiencing this oddity

As John experienced the same problem in another forum I think you are right

I use all the suggestion you made on a daily, weekly basis

Thanks for the reply maybe Lee will find the problem eventually

I just sent you an email as to why it is happening
Apr 24, 2008 3:00AM PDT

on the other computer or other broswer that you are using you are logged in under a different account.

Do me a favor and log out and log back in on the one that is posting as Marianna with email address that I emailed you. That should fix it.

Thanks!
